Boston's startup scene constantly gets compared, negatively, to San Francisco & NYC. A group of Bostonians had enough and decided to show everyone that we might not be the biggest or most famous innovation center but we are the loudest and nothing can stop us when we work together.

Bostonians from all over are uniting tonight to show that not only is our startup scene huge, vibrant and growing but we're also willing to help each other and others purely for the sake of helping. Need a job, a lead, or just someone to bounce ideas off of? Ruby Riot is calling your name.

Vertex moves out, Pfizer moves in

The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is looking to consolidate its two Cambridge locations into a single, more centrally-located facility. FierceBiotech reports. The company said in a release that it plans to "enhance its presence" in Cambridge, and to shift "selected resources" up from Groton. That, presumably, translates to more high-caliber biotech jobs for the Boston area. Pfizer already ranked as the tenth-largest employer in Cambridge last year, with 1,300 workers.

Boston ID'd as Recession-Surviving City

Boston has been identified as one of "20 Cities Surviving the Recession" in a piece by Miranda Marquit posted on Yahoo!:

Things do seem to be improving on the jobs front — at least in some places. Indeed, Forbes offers a list of cities where the recession is easing, based on data from the 40 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Yahoo Hot Jobs also reports on cities that are offering expected job growth in 2010. Here are 20 cities where the recession is ending — and you might be able to find a job....

Boston

The area that includes Boston, Cambridge and Quincy in Massachusetts is providing a nice Northeastern haven from the recession in some ways. Home prices are relatively stable, the city saw reasonable job growth during the recession. While the three-year forecast for job growth isn't as impressive, the city nonetheless is showing signs of economic life.

Boston "maker", indeed

The Globe captions the photo: "Lithion-ion battery maker Boston-Power Inc" in discussing Boston job creation. Funny, then, that the batteries have giant "Made in china" stamps on them. A123 Systems, the other company state leaders love to brag about, also makes its batteries in China.

The story also mentions the posterchild for government handouts, Evergreen Solar- who has repeatedly promised job creation in a dial-a-number fashion. In April of 2007, "300 to 350 jobs, more than doubling its current workforce"(which implies the current workforce was less than 300-350.) In April of 2008 after $23 million in handouts and $17.5 million in low-interest loans: "1000 jobs total", "tripling their workforce", which means it was still at 300 employees. Now, they're saying that they want to hire "90-100" people (right now, there's only one open job listing), and that when it "reaches full capacity", it will employ 800 people- which means that presumably, there are at most 700 people currently working there. Where did the other 200 jobs go? Probably to Michigan; while Deval was patting them on the back for creating jobs here and giving them giant wads of cash, the company was finishing up securing million of dollars in tax breaks for a plant in Michigan. The Great American Jobs Scam rolls on.
