Revere man gets second-degree murder for killing cop

By adamg - 2/2/10 - 6:23 pm

A Suffolk County Superior Court jury today convicted Robert Iacoviello, Jr, of second-degree murder for the death of Revere Police Officer Daniel Talbot on Sept. 27, 2007, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

James Heang was also convicted, as an accessory after the fact to murder, the DA's office says. Both will be sentenced on Friday.

Two other people pleaded guilty last year to being accessories after the fact in the case, in which a group of gang members had a confrontation with off-duty police officers who were drinking beer behind Revere High School. Thinking the cops were rival gang members, Iacoviello fired twice, hitting Talbot in the head.

Alice to have more room to park at Wonderland

By adamg - 12/7/09 - 2:07 pm

State officials said today they'll spend $47 million in federal stimulus funds and state bonds for a new garage at Wonderland station on the Blue Line.

At a ceremony there today, Gov. Patrick and other officials said the new nine-story, 1,900-space garage will be the first step in construction of Waterfront Square, a proposed development of 902 residential units, office and retail space and a hotel.

Roughly $23 million of the garage cost wll come from the feds, the rest from an MBTA bond that will be repaid through revenue from the parking lot.

East Boston teens charged with carjacking Revere pizza delivery guy

By adamg - 11/16/09 - 5:25 pm

Revere police say the two aged 17 and 14, used a gun to hold up a Domino's delivery man and steal his car Friday night.

The older teen, Toby Ryan, was arraigned today on a variety of charges in two separate courts. Prosecutors had asked for bail of $100,000 in Chelsea court on charges of armed carjacking, armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Judge Benjamin Barnes set bail at $1,500. In East Boston, Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr. set bail at $5,000 for the single count of receiving stolen property. Read more

Reward offered for info on boy who went missing - in 1974

By adamg - 9/23/09 - 4:19 pm

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley and Revere Police Chief Terence Reardon today announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Leigh Savoie, a 10-year-old boy who left his house on April 7, 1974 to shine shoes for an Easter present for his mother and then never returned.

Savoie, who would be 45 today, sometimes shined shoes at nearby Suffolk Downs. Later on the afternoon of the 7th, the owner of a Revere restaurant returned the kit to Savoie's home, saying the boy had dropped it off earlier in the day on his way to Revere Beach. He has not been seen since.

The DA's office says that in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, detectives are still classifying his disappearance as "missing." Anyone with information can call Revere Police at 781-286-8203 or State Police at 617-727-8817. Anybody who knew him or the neighborhood in 1974 is also asked to call.

By adamg - 9/1/09 - 9:25 am

The Independent Newspaper Group, which owns weekly newspapers from East Boston north to Lynn, is converting its old Web sites, which featured, well, not very much, to WordPress - which means RSS feeds, search boxes and even comments on articles. Compare the new Revere Journal site to the still old East Boston Times site. The Revere Journal even has a Twitter feed.

Sometimes, cops really don't want to arrest someone

By adamg - 8/13/09 - 10:32 pm

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that prosecutors could use a gun seized in a Revere motel unit as evidence against the man charged with possessing it.

A district court judge had thrown out the evidence against Jose Lopez, saying the arresting officer had neither a warrant nor proof the woman who let him into the unit had the authority to do so, but a majority on the appeals court ruled he could seize the gun under a "plain view doctrine" because he was in the room for another, legitimate reason.

Why was she letting him in to begin with? And why did he arrest Lopez only reluctantly? It's a story detailed in the court's ruling: Read more

Hold his calls: Phone-hacking Revere teen sent away for 11 years

By adamg - 6/30/09 - 9:15 am

Hubris proved the downfall of a Revere teen-ager, who kept hacking phone networks and using them to attack his enemies even after he learned the FBI was investigating him.

Matthew "L'il Hacker" Weigman, 19, was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison on Friday after pleading guilty to numerous charges centered on his participation in a national ring that arranged fake 911 calls intended to bring heavily armed SWAT cops to the homes of enemies - including one to his landlord. Weigman was also charged with threatening the career and life of a Verizon investigator who was tracking him. Read more
