East Boston teens charged with carjacking Revere pizza delivery guy

Revere police say the two aged 17 and 14, used a gun to hold up a Domino's delivery man and steal his car Friday night.

The older teen, Toby Ryan, was arraigned today on a variety of charges in two separate courts. Prosecutors had asked for bail of $100,000 in Chelsea court on charges of armed carjacking, armed robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Judge Benjamin Barnes set bail at $1,500. In East Boston, Judge Roberto Ronquillo, Jr. set bail at $5,000 for the single count of receiving stolen property.

Reward offered for info on boy who went missing - in 1974

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley and Revere Police Chief Terence Reardon today announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Leigh Savoie, a 10-year-old boy who left his house on April 7, 1974 to shine shoes for an Easter present for his mother and then never returned.

Savoie, who would be 45 today, sometimes shined shoes at nearby Suffolk Downs. Later on the afternoon of the 7th, the owner of a Revere restaurant returned the kit to Savoie's home, saying the boy had dropped it off earlier in the day on his way to Revere Beach. He has not been seen since.

The DA's office says that in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, detectives are still classifying his disappearance as "missing." Anyone with information can call Revere Police at 781-286-8203 or State Police at 617-727-8817. Anybody who knew him or the neighborhood in 1974 is also asked to call.

Proposed Voter Choice (IRV) Ballot Question would bring more voices and choices into MA elections

A “Voter Choice” initiative petition turned in to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office on Wednesday would give Massachusetts voters a chance to change to a voting system that lets voters rank their choices instead of voting for only one candidate. The change would apply to key races, including for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary and treasurer, among others, starting after January 2012.

Local newspaper chain begins to do something about its godawful Web sites

The Independent Newspaper Group, which owns weekly newspapers from East Boston north to Lynn, is converting its old Web sites, which featured, well, not very much, to WordPress - which means RSS feeds, search boxes and even comments on articles. Compare the new Revere Journal site to the still old East Boston Times site. The Revere Journal even has a Twitter feed.

Sometimes, cops really don't want to arrest someone

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that prosecutors could use a gun seized in a Revere motel unit as evidence against the man charged with possessing it.

A district court judge had thrown out the evidence against Jose Lopez, saying the arresting officer had neither a warrant nor proof the woman who let him into the unit had the authority to do so, but a majority on the appeals court ruled he could seize the gun under a "plain view doctrine" because he was in the room for another, legitimate reason.

Why was she letting him in to begin with? And why did he arrest Lopez only reluctantly? It's a story detailed in the court's ruling:

Because we really need another one of these.

Hello out there in UniversalHub land. I have determined that what the internet lacks most of all is a personal blog about some schlub's experiences in and around [insert major city here]. I have decided to rectify that problem my moving my ramblings over here.

I will be blogging about Boston politics, the T, local music, dining, bars, sports, and life from the perspective of a 21-year-old Revere native now living in an apartment in Chestnut Hill, where I will be a senior this fall at Boston College.
