Deer becomes roadkill in West Roxbury

Boston Police report a deer jumped in front of a startled motorist around 8:30 p.m. yesterday, causing a two-car crash - and its own demise - on Baker Street near the cemeteries.

On arrival, officers observed two cars, one that appeared to have rear-ended the other, and a deceased deer in the roadway. Officers spoke to the operator of the first car who stated that she was driving along Baker Street when the deer came out of nowhere and jumped in front of her motor vehicle. According to the operator, she was unable to avoid the animal.

Police say a driver behind the first car was unable to stop in time and hit the back of the first car. Both cars, however, were able to leave the scene under their own power, unlike the deer.

In December, another deer met its demise in front of Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, when it collided with a Boston Police cruiser.

A deer ran into a Boston Police cruiser around 9:50 p.m. in front of Faulkner Hospital. Cop is fine, cruiser is damaged enough to need a tow, no immediate word on the condition of the deer or how much doe it'll cost for repairs.

Candelaria Silva reports she and her granddaughter were waiting at Fields Corner for an Ashmont train last Saturday when a woman on the inbound side began yelling:

"Oh, my God, did you see that? Is that a deer? A deer just ran up the bus ramp!"

We looked behind us through the glass that separates the bus ramp from the train tracks and there it was - a deer. We saw it running back and forth three times.

Anecdotal evidence (more dead deer by the side of the road) seems to indicate a growing deer population in the large reservation just south of the city. The Friends of the Blue Hills reports the state Department of Conservation and Recreation is getting ready to do some serious studying to determine if there are more deer than the reservation can support and, if so, what to do about them. The process could take several years - one thing the DCR might do is fence in some small pieces of forest to keep deer out and compare the plant growth on either side of the fences.

AlertNewEngland tweets that a large brush fire that erupted this afternoon in Stony Brook Reservation between Reservation Road and Turtle Pond Parkway in Hyde Park flushed out a herd of deer, last spotted running down Reservation Road.

For a change, here's an urban-deer story with a happy ending: The Globe reports state environmental officers managed to successfully tranquilize a pair of deer off Freeport Street this morning so that they could be taken someplace a bit more bucolic.

Wicked Local Cambridge reports a deer that had been jumping around the square early this morning misjudged the height of a wrought-iron fence off Brattle Street and came down right on a spike. A city worker arrived just in time to euthanize her, so she didn't suffer long.

Boston Police report "a large deer" found its way to Juniper Street in Roxbury yesterday afternoon:

On arrival, officers observed a large deer roaming around the backyard of 38 Juniper Street. According to witnesses, the deer leapt a seven-foot fence before ending up in the backyard of 38 Juniper Street. In addition to Boston Police officers, Animal Control also responded to the scene. Since the deer appeared to be in good health and was in no immediate danger, the deer was left untouched and allowed to exit the area on its own.

Of course, that begs the question of how it got there in the first place. Maybe it jumped the fare gate at Forest Hills and got off the Orange Line at Roxbury Crossing?

Deer on the loose in Coolidge Corner!

Marcia Heist just reported that a doe bolted up her Centre Street driveway, in hot pursuit by an unmarked BPD car. The deer jumped a fence and headed down an alley by Beauty and Style, toward Harvard Street.

So the BPD is really bucking to capture her. Maybe they should set some of the Beacon Street killer turkeys after her. But wouldn't it be cool if this Brandeis professor captured her?

In any case, what's next? Black bears?
