Pre-teen, two teens charged with armed robbery in JP

Boston Police report an off-duty officer who spotted an apparent holdup in Jackson Square yesterday afternoon helped nab the three muggers: ages 12, 13 and 15.

Police say the officer, driving in her own car shortly after 1 p.m. spotted on kid surrounded by three others outside 200 Centre St.:

The officer alerted by this action slowed down and observed the young man put his hands in the teen's pocket and shortly thereafter take off inside the Heath Street development.

The officer quickly approached the victim who confirmed the officer's suspicions that he had been robbed. The victim told the off duty officer that he had been robbed of his iPod after one of the suspects motioned like he had a gun and threatened to shoot the victim.

The two girls and one boy were found in the boy's apartment. The three, too young to have their names released, were charged with armed robbery.

Getaway driver for 13-year-old's murderers admits to perjury

Destiny Gunn, 22, this week pleaded guilty to perjury for denying she drove Nurudeen Alabi and Darrell Rodrigues to and from Jackson Square, where they gunned down 13-year-old Luis Gerena in a gang feud he had nothing to do with.

Gunn will be sentenced on Dec. 20, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Prosecutors say Gunn lied to a grand jury when she said she couldn't remember giving the two a ride to and from the murder scene and when she denied being in the car when they used a gun to threaten a witness in the case.

Prosecutors say Gerena was walking home from a friend's house on Jan. 12, 2007, when Alabi and Rodrigues, members of the Academy Homes gang, went in search of a member of the rival Heath Street gang. Instead, they robbed and murdered Gerena.

Both men pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier this year and could be out of prison before they turn 40. Prosecutors say they reluctantly agreed to change first-degree murder charges - which could have meant life in prison without parole - because key witnesses in the case fled and then, when found, vowed not to cooperate.

Nurudeen Alabi, 21, pleaded guilty today to manslaughter for the 2007 slaying of a kid coming home from school, rather than face trial for first-degree murder.

Alabi was sentenced to 17 years in prison, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. Prosecutors say they only reluctantly agreed to the change from first-degree murder - which could have meant life behind bars - because two key witnesses fled and then, when they were apprehended, vowed not to cooperate.

Boston Police report a carjacking near the Jackson Square T stop ended with a manhunt on Amtrak tracks and in woods along the Hyde Park/Roslindale line.

The Boston Licensing Board decides Thursday what to do about a Jamaica Plain restaurant whose owner says he decided to drive a customer bashed in the head with a 2x4 to Boston Medical Center even though police officers were already outside investigating why 10 to 15 people had just run out of the place in pursuit of the alleged attacker.

If there was an injured customer, that is. Sgt. Brian Latson told the board officers were unable to find any evidence that anybody showed up at Boston Medical Center with a head injury from Jamaica Plain that night. Also, nobody in the Latino Restaurant, 302B Centre St., claimed to have seen anything at all.

BRA approves new recreational facility for Jackson Square

The Boston Redevelopment Authority reports it's given its nod to a $16-million facility that will feature a skating rink in the winter and an indoor turf yard the rest of the year.

The Columbus Avenue facility is part of the Jackson Commons project, which also calls for 438 new housing units - 291 designated as "affordable" - and community facilities, along with new retail and office space on 11.2 acres along Columbus Avenue.

District B-2 reports several gunpoint robberies over the past two weeks in the area between Centre Street and Columbus Avenue in Jackson Square and Tremont Street in Roxbury Crossing:

Most of the robberies have occurred between the hours of 11:30PM and 1:30AM. The suspects have been described as two black males armed with a black handgun. One of the robbery victims noticed a white SUV motor vehicle with occupants inside.

What the building could look like.

Urban Edge yesterday submitted plans to the city to build the recreational facility at 1562 Columbus Ave. as part of its Jackson Commons mixed-use development.

The space was originally meant for a DYS treatment program, but the state agency pulled out of the project in 2008. The new center would allow for skating in colder months and indoor turf sports the rest of the year in a 39,000-square-foot building:

Merchants in Jamaica Plain's three main shopping districts - Egleston and Jackson/Hyde squares and Centre/South streets - hope to drive the point home on Saturday with a daylong celebration of Jamaica Plain shopping that will feature food sampling, cooking demos and one-day discounts.

Jamaica Plain has some 20 bodegas and other stores that sell all sorts of food, from organic to Caribbean - and employ more than 100 people, according to Betsy Cowan, director of Egleston Square Main Street, one of the groups behind the "JP Shopping Spree." A man who lists St. Francis House on Boylston Street as his address was arrested yesterday on charges he began groping a woman he'd been staring at for several stops on a train heading toward Forest Hills.

According to an MBTA Transit Police report, a woman told police Abdulkadir Abbas, 29, started staring at her as soon as she got on the train at Community College. Around Mass. Ave., the woman reported, Abbas got up and sat next to her, put his hand on her right thigh and began rubbing it, moving higher until he was rubbing her genital area.

How Jackson Square could support an indoor hockey rink and field

Urban Edge has posted a copy of an analysis of the financial underpinnings of a proposed indoor sports center that would house both a hockey rink and a turf field, which says demand from the immediate neighborhood and higher fees charged to people and groups from outside the Jackson Square area would be enough to keep the facility running.

The report adds:

The opportunity for inner-city kids to participate in affordable ice skating activities is limited when compared to the programs offered in most other major cities. Surprisingly, Boston, widely considered a "hockey town", has not been on the forefront on inner-city skating program development.

Additionally, there are no accessible indoor fields in the Community.
