Googly eyed rock on Cornell Street

A couple months ago, a developer tore down two single-family homes on Cornell Street in Roslindale to build four townhouses. But it turns out there's this giant boulder right in the middle. Last night or today, somebody put a couple of giant googly eyes on it - alas, one of them has since fallen off.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge today freed Frederick Clay from prison, where he had been serving a life term for the murder of a cab driver at Roslindale's Archdale project in November, 1979, "after a reinvestigation by the DA’s Conviction Integrity Program led [DA Dan] Conley to conclude that justice may not have been done at Clay’s 1981 trial," a spokesman said today. Immigrant-themed mural in Roslindale

The Mayor's Mural Crew and the Mayor's Office for Immigrant Advancement are teaming up to paint murals under the theme of "To Immigrants with Love."

Atlas Liquors on Hyde Park Avenue in Roslindale and Dr. Dental on Meridian Street in East Boston have donated their wall space for the murals, being painted this month. Read more.

Former BSO flutist and Roslindale resident Fenwick Smith died last week. An Internet archive provides a glimpse of Mr. Smith's involvement in the rejuvenation of Roslindale Square, as reported by The Boston Phoenix in July 2001.

Goat in the Arnold Arboretum

For the second year, the Arnold Arboretum has turned to goats to beat back the weeds running roughshod over parts of its Peters Hill side. This week, three goats were unleashed in a fenced off overgrown area just up the path from the entrance at South and Bussey streets. Read more.

Brayton's in Roslindale Square

The Board of Appeal today approved builder Anthony Ruscito's plans to tear down Brayton's Custom Upholstery, 4281 Washington St., to make way for a four-story, 12-unit apartment building with 12 parking spaces on the first floor.

The existing oil-change place, also listed at 4281 Washington St., will remain.

Cat mural coming in

Looks like the Mayor's Mural Crew has given up trying to simply restore the bird mural at Washington and Archdale streets that has been defaced, restored and then defaced again over the past couple of years. Instead, work has started on a mural featuring a giant cat. Read more.

Taco Bell, which failed to persuade skeptical Roslindale residents last year that they wanted to live mas and support a Taco Bell between the Haley School and the Wendy's on American Legion Highway, is coming back with another proposal to tear down the open-once-in-awhile ice-cream stand that now holds that space. The state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has ordered Home Market, 165 Belgrade Ave., in Roslindale, to close Aug. 2, 3 and 4 as punishment for letting a 17-year-old with a fake Maryland driver's license walk out with an 18-pack of Bud Light, a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice, a six-pack of Twisted Tea and a 25-oz. can of Natural Ice one afternoon this past January.
