Richard Vetstein reports landlords are smokin' mad because the law passed by voters this week lets people with medical conditions grow a two-month supply of weed at home if they can't get to one of those dispensaries the law allows. Homegrown pot could mean mold, water damage, fires from improperly wired grow lights and even an increased risk of burglaries from thieves looking for a quick hit. And then there are the feds:

A federal appeals court ruled today Starbucks owes Massachusetts baristas more than $14 million for tips that were shared with supervisors between 2005 and 2011, because state law bars managers from dipping into the tip jar.

Starbucks tried to pour cold water on a class-action suit on behalf of more than 11,000 former and current baristas by arguing that "shift supervisors" weren't really managers because they mostly did the same work as baristas and so were entitled to the perk of sharing in pooled tips collected from customers.

Sometimes, Boston's cab drivers are telling the truth; the credit card machines don't work - and it's not their fault.

According to (Boston's own) Charles Pierce of Esquire, the Romney for President campaign shut off staffers' credit cards in the middle of the night on Tuesday, leaving the Boston crew scrambling for money.

We're heading to Jillian's* for Billiard's for Justice, on Tuesday, November 13th, starting at 6pm.

Don't worry if you don't rock the cue stick. Lots of people aren't that great at pool, but some SoJusters have claimed to have the skills. So show up for lessons, laughs, or just good people.

We'll have a few tables reserved from 6-8PM for the pool sharks, but plenty of non-billiards hanging out as well. Jillian's has some great appetizers, sandwiches and a full bar.

So look no further if you want to cross-promote your events and campaigns while avoiding hitting the 8 ball, are seeking like-minded progressives to play pool with in Boston, or are new to the area and looking for groups to get involved in. If you want to build a strong cross-issue social justice movement, SoJust is for you!

RSVP at www.sojust.org - Newcomers always welcomed!

Event fee: $10 ($2 suggested SoJust donation + $8 for billiards)

YES, WE MEAN YOU. We've got members of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, levels of activism and professions. We hope you see someone like yourself and meet someone you otherwise wouldn't have.

HEY ORGANIZERS! If you're involved with a group or project and want to spread the word bring flyers - there'll be lots of opportunity to schmooze and network!

Tom Menino called the Globe to say he's getting better even as he remains in the hospital.

Yeah, losing hurts and sometimes all you can do is lash out at the people around you. Adults can make a learning experience of it, though, Holly.

The Globe has the results for the two questions - and that third one about car repair.

WarrenYou can call her Senator Warren now.

As more votes come in, WHDH is calling Elizabeth Warren the winner over incumbent Scott Brown. Among other things, Warren becomes the state's first woman senator.

Shocker.

In related news, the Globe reports Logan faced a problem this afternoon when so many Romney supporters were flying into town in their private jets the airport was running out of space to put them all.

UPDATE: Oh, yeah, he lost the national election, too.

Dorcena sign in Roslindale

The early bird gets the job? Will Dorcena isn't waiting until next year to put up campaign signs, in this case in front of St. Nectarios in Roslindale.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today psychological evaluations of a prospective Boston police officer who passed a civil-service exam were too vague to keep her from donning a BPD uniform.

The ruling is a victory for both Jill Kavaleski, who was rejected three times by a pair of department psychiatrists, and the state Civil Service Commission, which had ruled those psychiatrists failed to show there was really anything wrong with Kavaleski. The ruling comes as a response to an appeal by the Boston Police Department of the commission's ruling.

Bostonians have organized drives to collect basic necessities for New Yorkers. Some examples (add more in the comments):

Jacqueline Carly will be at the Microsoft NERD Center in Kendall Square starting at 3 p.m. on Monday to collect basic supplies and load them into the truck she's rented to drive to New York.

Organize Boston has set up collection points in Roslindale, Cambridge and Arlington this weekend.

Police, fire and emergency-medical crews from across the area have descended on various locations in Boston this weekend for drills on dealing with a variety of situations, from hostage-taking bank robbers at the Circle Cinema in Cleveland Circle to a hazmat/suspicious package situation on a Blue Line train at Bowdoin (above). So any gunfire you might hear? Chances are it's not real.

Kiss every single bit of Boston that sits on landfill from the past 300 years goodbye: Back Bay, the South End, East Boston, half of South Boston, large swaths of Dorchester. See this flood map, which assumes a 5-foot storm surge on top of water levels 2.5 feet higher than today's levels.

So how about some giant barriers stretched across the harbor?

The city says 13 volunteers from the Office of Emergency Management and the Boston Centers for Youth and Families are headed to New York tomorrow to help with planning and logistics in New York's emergency operations center and with running an emergency shelter. The workers will spend the next week or two in New York, according to the mayor's office, which adds Boston has lent three generators to the New York Fire Department.

BostonHerald.com is now powered by Drupal. You go, you crazy open-source-loving fiends, you! But, um, the site (hosted by the Burlington-based Acquia, whose founder came up with Drupal) is lapsing in and out of consciousness this afternoon as they work out the kinks in their new cloud-based Drupal server farm.
