J.L. Bell runs down the reasons a pro-independence "oration" published in London under our very own rabblerouser's name probably wasn't actually written by him, let alone ever spoken out loud by him.

Dead Sam Adams truck in Jamaica Plain

A Sam Adams truck, about to make a delivery to Blanchard's around 9:30 a.m., kicked the bucket right in the middle of Centre Street, forcing police to block the road in both directions until the truck could be moved.

"Usually, I'm more than happy to see Sam Adams," Tiffani Faison, who took the photo, commented.

Boston Beer Corp. yesterday sued a former West Coast sales executive and the rival California brewer he went to work with to try to keep him from spilling any of its trade secrets.

In 1998, the California Supreme Court ruled other states could not enforce their non-compete clauses on its residents, because such clauses are illegal there. However, Boston Beer sued Judd Hausner and Anchor Brewing of San Francisco in US District Court in Boston, a state that allows non-compete clauses in employee contracts.

Maybe this explains why somebody is intent on building a Comfort Inn on South Huntington Avenue: Chicago's version of the Metro is sponsoring a bar-crawl contest, the winner of which gets "all-expenses paid trip to Boston to tour the Sam Adams brewery."

Hat tip to Stephanie.

You might want to back away from the bar if your bottle is brown and embossed on the bottom with "N35 OI".

Jason Faulconer, a local home brewer, read an e-mail from Jim Koch, founder of the Boston Beer Company who makes Samuel Adams beer. The e-mail, found by Jason through the Appellation Beer blog, was sent out to the Brewers Association of America offering hops to craft brewers looking at a serious hops shortage:

Has the Boston Brewing Co. started adding chutzpah to the beer whose name it appropriated from one of our local heroes?

Portland, OR has a city councilor named Sam Adams who is now running for mayor. A pair of DJs at a radio station out there set up samadamsformayor.com and said they would give it (and another samadams domain) to him if he came on their show. The beer company found out about the domains and got hopping mad: It is demanding the station pull the site down because it owns a trademark on "Sam Adams."

Associated Press reports:

The candidate says he's amused by the flap, pointing out that while Boston Beer claims to have owned the Sam Adams trademark since 1984, he's owned it since he was born in 1963.

The beer company told the Oregonian it would consider letting Adams use the domains, but only until the campaign was over.

That's not good enough for Portland bloggers, who are foaming mad and are now boycotting Sam Adams - the beer, that is, not the city councilor.

Special bonus Portland fun fact: The city was founded by, surprise, a pair of New Englanders, one from Boston, one from Portland, ME. Both wanted to name the new place after their hometown. What do do? They flipped a coin.

This Sam Adams seems upset (then again, he always seems upset):
