The owner of Packy Connors, 203 Blue Hill Ave., wants to sell his liquor license to a proposed Asian restaurant on the South Boston waterfront.

James Cairns goes before the Boston Licensing Board next week for permission for the deal. Coming on the heels of the Breezeway's decision to shut down this would mean Blue Hill Avenue will not have a single bar in Mattapan or Roxbury.

Shrine hopes to open this summer in an office building next to the federal courthouse.

Packy Connors was long the bane of police in District B-2, but after four people were shot outside at closing time, the bar instituted new security measures and stopped being a frequent visitor to the licensing board.

Boston Licensing Director Patricia Malone says she faces a thorny question: Whether to let an upscale waterfront steakhouse turn the sound on on televisions mounted on its outdoor patio.

Smith and Wollensky, on Congress Street on Fort Point Channel, has probationary permission to turn TVs on the patio on - but only with the sound off. Now it wants to be able to turn the sound on, for both select TV shows and for background music.

Thomas Kershaw's Hampshire House Corp. asks the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to open a bar at Liberty Wharf on Northern Avenue.

The proposed Little Chestnut Boston Harbor would fill what is now a vacant "kiosk" next to the main wharf complex, which already houses several restaurants with bars. The 1,490-square-foot bar would have room for 60 patrons.

Rather than just hope the board has a spare license to hand out, Hampshire House already has a deal to buy the liquor license from XO Bar and Restaurant on Washington Street in Dorchester.

NorthEndWaterfront.com ponders the news that residents of Harbor Towers and Rowes Wharf are trying to carve out a new identity as the Wharf District when they're already covered by the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council. In fact, the current president of that group is a Harbor Towers resident:

When is a neighborhood a neighborhood? Hard to say. In Boston, neighborhoods are often marked by resident parking signs, something the Wharf District is lacking. Many would say that you’re not a neighborhood until you can get a resident parking sticker. Then, there is political representation. The Wharf district is lumped into the huge Precinct 6 of Ward 3 that includes most of the Downtown area. As more residents and businesses establish themselves, some type of city precinct redistricting could more formally acknowledge the arrival of the neighborhood.

And what of the newer development closer to South Station? Would they hook up with Harbor Towers or align with Fort Point - where the guy who owns many of the old warehouse buildings once proposed renaming them as the Wharf District?

The BRA last night gave final approval to plans for the first of three new developments on the pier, a 383-unit apartment building, the Boston Business Journal reports.

Greek food store gets approval to sell beer and wine; clothing store, however, has to stick to fabric

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved a request from Greek International Foods on Washington Street in West Roxbury for a license to sell beer and wine. However, the board rejected a request from Louis, the upscale clothing store on the waterfront, to nestle a full-service liquor store among its suits.

Total annual year-to-date ridership up 7.0% from 3,148,612 in 2010 to 3,368,580 in 2011.
Average weekday ridership up 5.7% from 15,015 in 2010 to 15,877 in 2011.
Average Saturday ridership up 67.3% from 5,550 in 2010 to 9,285 in 2011.
Average Sunday ridership up 8.0% from 8,422 in 2010 to 9,098 in 2011.

Another waterfront bar tries to stop patrons from making a splash

A man who jumped into Boston Harbor from the roof deck at Whiskey Priest in August has gotten the bar in hot water.

A manager at the Northern Avenue watering hole told Boston Licensing Board Chairwoman Nicole Murati Ferrer today they've added additional staff to the deck and posted 10 to 12 signs around the deck warning that harbor jumping will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law - assuming they can catch the jumpers to begin with.

Firefighters rescue South Boston construction workers trapped by shifting rebar

The Boston Fire Department reports some shifting rebar pinned two workers and injured a third some 30 feet below ground level around 1:40 p.m. at the Vertex construction site on the waterfront at 50 Northern Ave.

Firefighters used a crane and a "man cage" to get the men, suffering from leg and arm injuries up to waiting EMTs.

The workers are helping to build two 18-story buildings as the $1-billion headquarters of Vertex, a pharmaceutical company now based in Cambridge.
