City to try to make Boston a major port again

The BRA is leading efforts to win federal stimulus money for a proposed $84-million revamp of the antiquated Marine Industrial Park (which includes the Black Falcon Pier), by among other things, adding facilities for handling larger cruise ships and restoring freight rail service back to the waterfront.

A three-story Legal Seafood

The Globe reports Legal will replace the old Jimmy's Harborside with a giant new restaurant it'll call Legal's Harborside. Two other restaurants will also go into the renovated pier.

Cat burglar scores big at South Boston luxury complex

District C-6 reports two jewelry heists sometime this past weekend at 25 Channel Center, part of a complex where prices start at $759,000. In one case, on the 11th floor, "assorted antique jewelry valued at approximately $213,000 was stolen." In the other case, on the 8th floor, "assorted antique jewelry, Flamet painting, and a Dell laptop" worth a total of $30,000 was lifted. In both cases, police say, there were no signs of forced entry.

Waterfront building owner ordered to open grounds to the common people

The state has fined the owner of Independence Wharf on Atlantic Ave. for failing to open public areas on its property to the public.

In a statement, the department says Independence Wharf LLC has seen the error of its ways and agreed to pay both a $21,000 fine and $35,000 in missed state fees dating back to 2001 - when the owners agreed to create public spaces on the property as part of getting state permission to build right on the water.

The company will create "a facility of public accommodation of 2,856 square feet" on the ground level and will post signs letting the public know a 14th-floor viewing area is actually open to the public.
