Pig in sauce comes to West Roxbury

Centre Street's culinary diversity expanded again Friday night when Red-Eyed Pig opened for business where Fresh Catch to Go used to be, just off of Belgrade.

They have some burger and chicken things on the menu, but, of course, you're going to go there for the pig things (St. Louis and baby back ribs, pulled pork and smoked pork belly, along with green chile and pork-belly donuts) and brisket, slathered in barbecue sauce. Or if you can't decide, there's the Piggy - a burger topped with pork belly, beef brisket, pulled pork, melted cheddar, tomato jam and barbecue sauce (fries and cardiologist visit extra).

Even without any advertising, word's quickly gotten out - the place was packed Friday and was pretty busy when we stopped by Saturday evening. It's pretty much a takeout place, although they have outfitted a counter with seats for four or five people.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the place has the same owner as the Blue-Eyed Crab in Plymouth. No word is she's a green-eyed lady.

Channel 25 reports on an incident this afternoon on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. Note the location of one of the bicycles - right by a "sharrow" meant to tell drivers and bicyclists to watch out for each other in the shared lane. Injuries were minor, 25 says.

Rotaries stymie bike-lane planners

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the city will paint bike lanes from the Monument down Centre Street all the way to the beginning of the VFW Parkway - except through the large rotary where the Arborway comes in - because rotaries are just too risky for bicylists, who are advised to use the sidewalks around them.

Changing of the guard in West Roxbury

In October, 1921, the Boston Fire Department's Engine 30 in West Roxbury officially and finally switched from horses to a truck. Herald-Traveler photographer Leslie Jones was there to watch the horses leave the station for the last time. From the Boston Public Library's fire department collection.

Centre Street regulars will notice that one thing hasn't changed: The firehouse itself, still home to Engine 30 (and Ladder 25).

The Boston Licensing Board decides Thursday what to do about a Jamaica Plain restaurant whose owner says he decided to drive a customer bashed in the head with a 2x4 to Boston Medical Center even though police officers were already outside investigating why 10 to 15 people had just run out of the place in pursuit of the alleged attacker.

If there was an injured customer, that is. Sgt. Brian Latson told the board officers were unable to find any evidence that anybody showed up at Boston Medical Center with a head injury from Jamaica Plain that night. Also, nobody in the Latino Restaurant, 302B Centre St., claimed to have seen anything at all.

West Roxbury bank held up

Boston Police tweet the Hyde Park Savings Bank, 1920 Centre St., was robbed this afternoon by a white guy in a brown ski mask and a gray sweatshirt, who then ran away.

The last time the bank was robbed was last November, allegedly by a Dorchester man who convinced an unwitting friend to drive him across town.

The billboard atop the Corrib these days. What would be really funny is if it were just the first in a series: "There are lots of pizza places in West Roxbury," followed by "There are lots of funeral homes in West Roxbury."

Oh, and the Cooperative Bank is continuing the new Westie trend of banks moving from Centre to Spring Street - it's moving into much larger quarters in the old police-supply place near the Shaw's. One wonders if its current location across from the Hyde Park Savings Bank will be filled by the Surly Bank (whoever moves in, though, needs to keep the electronic time/temperature sign, because it's always fun to see how it never agrees with the sign at the Hyde Park bank).

Boston Police tweet the Commonwealth Cooperative Bank, 733 Centre St. was held up this afternoon.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5'4" tall, thin build with acne, wearing a brown construction jacket, blue jeans and white sneakers.

First official snowman of the season

The guys from Wicked Sharp, a new ski and snowboard shop on Centre Street in West Roxbury, went up to the skating rink on VFW Parkway today and got enough ice shavings to build a snowman outside their store.

Merchants along Centre Street have bought nine crosswalk signs to remind drivers that, in fact, they're supposed to stop for pedestrians, not try to pick up points by running them down, which apparently a growing number of them have done over the past year.

City councilor: Might be time for parking meters in West Roxbury

City Councilor John Tobin said today he wants a meeting with city transportation officials to look at installing parking meters in the West Roxbury business district along Centre Street.

Tobin said he's hearing from a growing number of merchants who want meters as a way of increasing turnover in spaces. In addition to on-street spaces, the city has two small lots off Centre Street, one behind the post office, the other across from the Dapper O'Neil mural,

City Transportation Commission Tom Tinlin said he'd be willing to meet, but cautioned the city has generally resisted efforts to put meters in outlying business areas to try to keep from driving would-be customers to suburban malls such as the South Shore Plaza, where parking is free. A possibly better solution would be better enforcement of two-hour limits on parking along Centre Street, which would encourage the turnover the merchants seek while not making local shoppers flee to Braintree.

Their discussion took place at a City Council hearing on raising fines for parking violations outside of Boston Proper.

Gunshots, car crash, foot chase, arrest in Jamaica Plain

Piecing this together from a tweet by Lindsay Crudele and mail from a Perkins Street resident. Around midnight, Crudele reported:

hyde sq crash; 1 guy tore arnd rotary, crashed his car, police saw so he took off running, left his car in the road.

Our e-mail correspondent then picks up the story:

It's about midnight. I hear a car crash and 5 minutes later there's a swarm of cops kneeling on some dude in my yard outside my dining room window. I hear something about "Rizzos" (the pizza place on Center), blowing though red lights, the crash, gun shots, and "he did the shooting."

There's obviously more to this, so mark this as "developing" ...
