Derailed Green Line trolley on Huntington Avenue

Stuck trolley. Photo by Jon Frederick.

Michael Femia reports a trolley acting as a plow got stuck on Huntington Avenue by the Museum of Fine Arts around 12:30 p.m. Yacques reports it derailed and took out a street light and hit a pole.

In the photo above, that yellow thing was the plow attached to the front of the trolley.

Frederick also happened to photograph the snow mound that did in the trolley before the trolley arrived:

Crushed windshield in Kenmore Square

This is Leanne Winters's windshield this morning - after some ice/snow plunged into it. She reports the car was parked in Kenmore Square at the time, unoccupied, so nobody hurt.

Buses in a row in Brighton

KWAPT shows us the non-moving bus traffic on Washington Street in Brighton, where a bus and a cab may have tried to occupy the same space at the same time. Traffic elsewhere is marginally better, except possibly in Kenmore Square, where the stop lights have taken the night off.

Atlantic Avenue by Summer is also a morass of non-movingness, as Cybah noticed out his office window:

The Globe reports Boston 2024 has dropped the idea of forcing students out of year-long leases as a way to house thousands of Olympics-goers. The Globe cites the generally shoddy natures of these apartments, the risk that actual families might be forced out and protests from landlords that the Olympics plan would prevent them from gouging tourists like hotels hope to.

With parking-lot fees around Fenway Park continuing to rise, out-of-towners increasingly see a $40 fine for parking in resident-only spots in the Fenway as a bargain.

City Councilor Josh Zakim (Fenway, Mission Hill, Back Bay, Beacon Hill) wants to put a stop to that - by increasing the fine for parking in a resident-only space on the streets around the ballpark to $100.

Zakim said it's unfair that Fenway residents with parking permits have to compete for spaces with out of towners in for a game.

The council agreed today to send Zakim's idea to a committee for a hearing.

Cops at Landmark Center

Ryan captured the BPD squad at Landmark Center after the Super Bowl.

Police have locked down Kenmore: No cars, pedestrians being allowed in; only people in Kenmore bars being allowed onto streets - and that to leave the area. The Green Line is bypassing Kenmore station.

In a message to students, BPD Commissioner William Evans says play nice and don't do anything you wouldn't want your dean of students to find out about:

As tourist-oriented as the Boston area is, it might not have enough hotel rooms to handle the crush of spectators, media types and various hangers on who would flood into town for the Olympics. Boston 2024 has an answer:

You know all those students who normally sublet their apartments in the summer? Boston 2024 would try to convince landlords to offer them only nine-month leases for 2023-2024 - which would leave the apartments clear for renting out to Olympics visitors at a premium that summer. But don't worry: The group is proposing some short-term rent control to ensure spectators aren't gouged, well, not too much.

In the last day or so, all the news boxes have mysteriously disappeared from my namesake neighborhood, around Mass. and Huntington. No more Improper Bostonian, no more South End News, no more Bay Windows, all banished from their convenient locations by Symphony Hall, in front of Whole Foods, and near the Green Line entrances.

Parklet marker near Audubon Circle

A concerned citizen reports on the situation on Buswell Street:

There are two of these. They guarded a parklet. Said parklet has begun its winter hibernation but his two friends remain. I just talked to his two friends and they'd like to join Mr. parklet in hibernating before they get snowed on as currently they just block parking spaces.

With the Muddy River rising fast, around 5:20 p.m., the MBTA shut the Riverside Line between Kenmore and Fenway and workers rushed to the portal just past Fenway to begin laying sandbags to keep the Muddy out of the Green Line, in two separate temporary dams.

Around 6:30 p.m., the Muddy River reached 16.4 feet - 1.4 feet above the flood stage at which its waters might begin pouring into the portal:

At 8:29 a.m., the MBTA tweeted:

#GreenLine: All branches: Moderate eastbound delays due to power issue.

In response to somebody's query about what exactly "moderate" means when he's been sitting on a trolley that hasn't moved in ten minutes, the T added:

Yes, we describe a "moderate" delay as a major disruption in service.

At 8:54, Andrea reported:
