St. Patrick's Day

By adamg - 3/15/14 - 11:28 am

For our Jewish friends: The Bruegger's on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury has green plain bagels.

MassLive reports on Boston Beer Co.'s statement this morning:

We have been participating in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade for nearly a decade and have also supported the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast year after year. We’ve done so because of the rich history of the event and to support veterans who have done so much for this country.

UPDATE, Friday a.m.: Sam Adams drops sponsorship of the parade.

Club Cafe on Columbus Avenue says it is dropping Sam Adams for its decision to continue sponsoring the St. Patrick's Day parade in South Boston.

In a post on its Facebook page, its owners say they'll resume sales of the beer when either LGBT groups are allowed to march openly in the parade or the Boston Beer Co. stops sponsoring the parade.

And his wife declares he's not a bigot. Glad that's settled.

By adamg - 3/4/14 - 11:45 am

Well, that went well:

The Council performs background checks on groups wishing to march prior to their acceptance. We were unable to find any evidence of LGBT Veterans for Equality that would confirm them as a recognized Veterans Organization.

We appreciate the efforts the Mayor’s office to try and mediate this issue. However it is our intention to keep this an Irish Celebration, dedicated to our Men and Women serving in our Armed Forces. We will fight to keep our parade and its traditions.

Peter Wilson at WBZ reports the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Harvard won't let its students march in the St. Patrick's Day parade in South Boston because it doesn't want anybody thinking it condones "the homosexual lifestyle" it's apparently convinced parade organizers now countenance by letting a group that supports gay rights promote "diversity."

The school pulled out of a parade in Worcester last year for the same reason.

The Globe reports on the decision by the South Boston Association of Non-Profits to march under the don't-ask-don't-tell restrictions set by parade organizers.

Earlier:
MassEquality says no deal.
But what about the Imperial storm troopers?

By adamg - 3/1/14 - 7:30 am

The Globe reports on a deal brokered by Mayor Walsh that will let MassEquality march - as long as they don't wear shirts or carry signs that have the word "gay" on them. No word if they'll be allowed to carry rainbow flags as long as all the stripes but the green one are taped over.

UPDATE: MassEquality says thanks, but no thanks:

The fact that Parade organizers are willing to have a conversation with MassEquality is an important part of ongoing public dialogue about LGBT people and the Parade. But at this point, it’s still just a conversation. MassEquality has not accepted any invitation to march, and will only consider accepting an invitation that allows LGBT people to march openly.

We have heard from LGBT people who are Irish, who are veterans, and many others who would like to march in the Parade and to be able to express all of who they are. LGBT people should not have to silence who they are to celebrate other parts of their identities.

For some reason, the Globe suddenly cares what blowhard C.J. Doyle thinks about the St. Patrick's Day parade and Marty Walsh's decision to continue the city's mayoral boycott until it allows gay veterans to march. And what he has to say is:

Linehan

UPDATE: The Limerick Leader has revised its story and now calls Linehan merely ONE of Boston's top politicians. You know what this calls for, of course:

There once was a paper in Hibernia
That seemed to confuse Boston with Serbia
A man named Linehan
They called the top strongman
Gave local writers a hernia

By adamg - 2/13/14 - 10:37 am

Rather than just sitting there at the St. Patrick's Day roast while that woman from Dorchester MCs, City Councilor Bill Linehan will instead be in Limerick, Ireland, the Globe reports.

By adamg - 9/6/13 - 7:31 pm

Good news, everyone! State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry and City Councilor Bill Linehan issued a statement tonight agreeing that she will host the St. Patrick's Day breakfast and that they will now get back to the task of dealing with public safety, substance abuse and neighborhood development.

In the statement, Forry says:

By adamg - 9/6/13 - 12:10 am

The host has long been the state senator from South Boston, but now the state senator for South Boston isn't from South Boston and so the gloves are off and City Councilor Bill Linehan, who took over hosting when Jack Hart quit as senator, vows not to let some upstart from, gawd, Dorchester, host the breakfast.

Fancy ride in St. Patrick's Day parade

By adamg - 3/17/13 - 10:28 am

Mayor advises residents: Don't be a knucklehead - and if you have a house along the parade route, watch those guests near the deck railings.

Big log in Brookline

Turlach MacDonagh wonders: Why were happy green people carrying a big log down Beacon Street in Brookline this morning?
