A man facing deportation to his native Haiti after pleading guilty to threatening two men with a gun in Dorchester in 2016 can withdraw his plea because the judge in the case didn't adequately explain that a conviction would likely result in deportation, the Supreme Judicial Court ruled today. The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld a state commission's ruling to suspend a liquor chain's license for several days at two stores because it sold alcohol at costs lower than the invoice price it paid, in violation of state regulations. Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court yesterday overturned a Tyngsboro man's conviction for "interference with a police officer," saying he had a First Amendment right to yell at the cops trying to confiscate his collection of 15 guns and that prosecutors failed to prove he physically tried to block them from taking away the weapons. The Supreme Judicial Court today ordered a lower-court judge to reconsider her ruling that the state can refuse to give the Boston Globe copies of databases of birth and marriage records that are available as public records to anyone willing to pay $9 an hour to sit at a terminal in a state office on Columbia Point. The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that a bicyclist can sue the downtown-Boston steam company for injuries he suffered when an allegedly misaligned utility cover on New Sudbury Street threw him to the ground, because the state law that governs complaints about road repair only refers to the government bodies that own the roads, not private companies that may have done something to cause a problem on those roads. The Supreme Judicial Court today overturned Christopher Rivera's conviction for being an accessory after the fact to a 2011 murder in Jamaica Plain, ruling that while he did lie to cops interviewing him about the way his friend fatally stabbed a man in a fight outside a convenience store, none of his lies helped his pal or threw police off the case in any way, as required by the state law that defines "accessories." The Supreme Judicial Court today rejected a man's Second Amendment challenges to his conviction for illegal gun possession, ruling he failed to obtain a gun license within 60 days of moving here as required by state law, and never mind that he allegedly used the gun to threaten his Massachusetts girlfriend at least twice during the six months they shared her apartment, the last time during a drunken rage that forced her to flee her apartment and call 911. The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld the first-degree murder convictions of two men for luring Richel Nova to a vacant house on Hyde Park Avenue in 2010, stabbing him 16 times, then fleeing in his car with a blood-stained pizza box, the contents of which they ate. Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld a fine of more than $2.6 million against a beer distributor for kickbacks paid to some Boston-area bars to give its beers guaranteed taps, but said that the state commission that oversees liquor laws can't punish a Seaport bar that accepted the bribes because of what it said was a tortured interpretation of those laws.
