Adam Reilly gets the scoop: GateHouse Media, which now owns all those suburban papers around here, is dropping the Herald's online classified system in favor of its own branded Wicked Local classifieds (with hints the editorial will shift to Wicked Local as well):

... It's not clear how much money Purcell's going to lose as a result, but it should be a tidy sum. ...

He quotes a memo from GateHouse local uber-guy Kirk Davis that ends:

In general, I like listening to 'BZ on the way to work - they can do a good job with breaking news (Danvers) and they always let me know what's on the front page of the day's Globe.

This morning, they faced a tough decision. Should they send ace reporter/poet Carl Stevens out to cover a gang-related double shooting in Roxbury (one dead, one wounded) or a store on Newbury Street that had a window smashed this morning?

Guess which one they chose?

Jesse Noyes reports that Channel 7 is making Matt Lorch the anchor of the 10 o'clock news on Channel 56 - which is of interest to people who just can't say "Lorch" often enough, if not Amy at Pasquinade.

Also, the new Gary LaPierre on WBZ is some guy from a New York station (who did grow up in Massachusetts, though).

David Scott has the deets on the sportsy cat fight, which so far actually seems limited to Ryan howling about Bill Simmons and Simmons just sitting there, not saying a thing (Media Farm wonders if it's all just a ploy by Ryan to make himself relevant again - hmm, isn't that Shaughnessy's thing, you know, pick a fight for no particular reason?).

The Weekly Dig is reporting that Herald Editorial Director Ken Chandler is leaving the paper - the week after it let three arts staffers go and not long after it lost high-profile reporters Kimberly Atkins and Brent Ahrends.

To become a media consultant in New York, Herald says.

John Daley finds it interesting that a story that ran in the Times about cities gaining populations of young people didn't have a paragraph about loser cities - which include Boston - but that the paragraph did run in other papers that carried the story.

You'd think the Herald would be all over the story of the Beacon Hill flack hack who got a no-heavy-lifting job that will serve mainly to guarantee him a nice state pension. But nooo. And now it's too late because the guy has quit the job. Tsk.

My disclosure's been around long enough to deserve a pension of its own.

It is that time of year when college kids who got pets, can not take them home, and can not leave them in the dorm rooms. Or kids who got what they thought was a great pet, only to be overwhelmed with the care and feeding of another living creature. An animal, which may not have responded the way the student expected the pet to.

I read so many postings on Craig'slist, long postings, some full of sorrow, about the loss of a pet. From people who had never been given the slightest lesson in how to care for the animal in the first place.

I decided to send letter to two posters tonight, not to talk about adopting their animals, but how to help them keep their pets. One poster had a rat, the rat had bit him. Out of fear I think. I will know further once he responds to my letter. The second poster does not believe he is able to properly care for his pet as it looks unhappy. Again, when he responds to my questions I will better understand what he means by 'happy' and if the young owner, is properly caring for his pet.

Mass. Marrier compiles a list of stories the local media never seemed to ask any questions about, including:

Roberto Scalese makes the mistake of turning on Dennis and Callahan this morning:

... Gerry Callahan just said Muslims should not be allowed to pray on an airplane, because it makes everyone else on the plane nervous. Apparently, keeping your backwards stereotypes is more important than protecting first amendment rights.

Hey Jason Wolfe, isn't that just as bad, if not worse, than John DePetro calling Grace Ross a fat lesbian? Can we expect Callahan on the bread line tomorrow morning? ...

Brian McGrory recently admitted publicly that he could not decide if he were a fool or Mitt Romney were a fraud. At issue: $400,000 Romney cut from state funding for homeless shelters.

Now, in the face of a public outcry, Romney has restored the money. And Brian is in love with the governor again:

... What Romney did on Friday when he reversed the cut was something all too rare in public life: He made a difference.

Channel 4 finally admitted that CBS4Boston was stupid, announcing it's going to call itself WBZ again. John Daley notes:

Now that that's settled we learn that Channel 7 has been cleared to absorb Channel 56, which should add up to Channel 63. But I don't think that's how it works.

What the Hell was WHDH thinking when they booted Todd Gross (a scientist) and replaced him with Pete "At Milk & Cookies Time..." Bouchard? The nitwit couldn't keep up with Romper Room! Did they pluck Bouchard from a special ed class in Newton? And what's with that Phillipino chick's war paint and collagen suction cups? Just wonderin'.

Mats Tolander turns on 'RKO today and promptly gets annoyed:

... Now the news are delivered by Fox News Radio, "Live from New York" as the feed happily informs WRKO's listeners in the Puritan hinterlands. It annoys me, it really does. It cheapens WRKO. What's next? A drive-time talker out of Chicago? ...

Well, there's always Jay Severin. Oh, wait, never mind.

Brian McGrory is flabbergasted that the Occasional Governor would step on the backs of the poor to pick up some more conservative votes in South Carolina:

Either I'm a fool, or our governor is a fraud.

WRKO today got rid of its entire news department. Jessica Heslam talks to veteran newsreader Listo Fisher, who says he was caught off guard and can't imagine how an all-talk station could broadcast without news.

Has nothing to do with his frustration over pinko Hillary-loving reporters and everything to do with what happens after Jan. 2, when local reporters start getting access to Beacon Hill files that might prove embarrassing to the Man Who Would Be President. At least, that's what Seth Gitell, who knows something about the local press (having served as Menino mouthpiece), argues.
