Longwood skyline to get taller with 17-story Emmanuel dorm

Emmanuel College got a green light from the city this week to finish plans for a 17-story dorm on Brookline Avenue and to lease part of its campus to Brigham and Women's for a new research building on Avenue Louis Pasteur.

In a vote earlier this week, the BRA approved the college's "institutional master plan," which calls for replacing the existing four-story Julie Hall with a high rise that will include dorm rooms for 720 students (500 more than the current building) as well as classroom and dining space. The college also wants to build an underground garage, which will allow for the replacement of current parking-lot spaces with landscaping.

The specific building project still needs to go through the BRA's public-hearing process, as does another proposal to add five stories to the college library.

The college also plans to lease part of its campus along Avenue Louis Pasteur to Brigham and Women's, which plans to use the land to build a 360,000-square foot research facility sometime over the next six to eight years. In 2000, the college leased another parcel on the street to Merck.

The Crimson reports ISD has given Sami's a month to either install plumbing or shut down, because inspectors have determined the stand at Longwood and Avenue Louis Pasteur is not mobile and therefore falls under the city building code, which requires permanent plumbing. Sami's landlord, Harvard, says it has no plans to help Sami's out by running pipes out to the stand, the Crimson reports.

Save Sami's petition - or, at least, donate to buy them a truck (Ed. note: Maybe they could team up with the lady from the Beacon Hill Mexican-food place).

And now came the hardest part: waiting. Waiting sucks. It was six in the morning. Even though all I wanted to do was sleep, I could only doze off for about twenty minutes. I wandered aimlessly through the parents' lounge. I watched the slice of sky between buildings outside the window change from black to grey to light blue as dawn broke over the city of Boston. Over an hour later the liaison called into the operating room for an update, and the specimen still hadn't been taken out of my son's body. I found that a little worrisome. Another colleague who was working in a nearby ICU stopped by to visit me after his morning rounds. Facebook friends were sending volumes of good wishes. I felt incredibly uplifted and supported but every clock tick was like something poking me to remind me that all was not yet well. It was like waiting for a plane to land and fearing that something might still happen.

Allston rapist may have attacked another woman in Fenway

Officials say the man who tied up and sexually assaulted a woman on Webley Road in Allston last week may also be responsible for another attack on Sept. 13 in the area of Brookline Avenue.

Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, who released this sketch today, say the Allston victim described her attacker as 20 to 25, black, with a medium complexion, thin build, 5'8" or 5'9" and dark, wavy brown hair. He spoke either Spanish or Portuguese.

Officials said the Fenway victim was unable to provide a description of her assailant; officials declined to specify why they think the two attacks may be linked.

Fatal rollover at Riverway and Brookline Avenue overnight

A Dedham man faces OUI charges related to a fatal rollover at the Riverway and Brookline Avenue that left one of his passengers dead, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports, adding he will likely face additional charges.

According to the DA's office, Robinson Avendano, 38, lost control of his black BMW around 1 a.m. and hit a tree before the car rolled over. A front-seat passenger, a 26-year-old Dorchester woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Avendano and a passenger in the back seat were taken to Beth Israel Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the DA's office says.
