Third Decade details tomorrow's Old Fashioned Roxbury Apple Festival, 1-4 p.m. at Paige Academy, 28 Highland Ave. There'll be cooking classes, drumming and fresh cider (note: Wear some clean socks - the academy has a no-shoes rule for indoor activities).

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports Kelly's Roast Beef wants to turn the old Marty's Liquors into a roast-beef emporium open until 2 a.m. - just down Harvard Ave. from Redneck's, which has long been open until 3 a.m.

Roslindale Square loses landmark bakery

The sign's still lit up, but the bakery itself is now dark.

Joe Murphy says he tried, he really did. He'd show up at the bakery he'd just bought on Washington Street every day at 2 a.m. despite the vertigo from an accident that so bad doctors had put him in a coma for nine weeks. When the economy went south and people stopped buying non-necessities like hand-made cakes, he made plans to add a cafe. When red tape at the city Inspectional Services Department delayed that for months, he still persevered.

UBurger wants to open downtown; West Roxbury could become more cordial

UBurger, which already sells fresh burgers and hand-cut fries to BU students from two location, plans to open a third outlet on Tremont Street at Temple Place.

The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to grant UBurger a license to open between 11 a.m. and midnight seven days a week. At a brief hearing today, the board had no major questions; member Suzanne Ianella, who lives nearby, did ask how much a burger would cost (about $5, depending on toppings, a restaurant lawyer told her).

Meanwhile, out in West Roxbury, the Skara Grill on Centre Street wants to add cordials and liqueurs to its drink menu. The board will also vote on this request tomorrow. The West Roxbury Neighborhood Council and City Councilor John Tobin both say they're in favor.

Suit: This town not big enough for two Living Rooms

The Living Room, an Atlantic Avenue restaurant, filed suit yesterday against Starwood Hotels, which is about to open a restaurant called the Living Room in its new W hotel on Stuart Street in the Back Bay.

In its suit, filed in US District Court in Boston, the original Living Room says the new Living Room would confuse Boston diners, that it's trademarked the name for use as a restaurant and that it was here first - it opened in 2002. The W Living Room is scheduled to open on Thursday.

The age-old debate: Cannolis from Mike's or the Modern?

Jen can't decide, but says the cannolis at Mike's have one advantage - if you buy so many that you can't eat them all at once:

... From personal experience, I have found that the cannolis from Mike's Pastry keep longer. The shells seem to stay relatively crunchy for at least one whole day (overnight), whereas the Modern Pastry cannolis get soggy in less than 24 hours. This could be because the Modern shells are smaller, lighter, and more delicate than the heftier, cookie-like shells from Mike's. ...
