554,000 in Massachusetts Struggle to Put Food on the Table

Project Bread, the state’s leading antihunger organization, released numbers from its upcoming annual status report on hunger in the Commonwealth. The disquieting trends described in this report, caused by high unemployment, point to 554,000 people in the Commonwealth struggling with hunger. Food insecurity has found its way into middle class suburbs and has driven low-income people further into crisis. The report argues for a public health approach and asks that the state continue to bring systemic solutions to scale — especially healthy school and summer food programs for kids.

New Study Proves Kids Like Eating Healthy Food

Think your kids won’t eat healthy foods? Think again. A preliminary report of the Chefs in Schools Initiative by the Harvard School of Public Health, funded by Project Bread, proves that kids not only like healthy school meals, but actually eat more of the healthy foods than they would if they were eating a traditional school meal.

2009 Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 3

In the midst of the steepest economic downturn in fifty years, Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 3, takes on urgent meaning for those struggling to put food on the table. “We have never needed it more,” says Ellen Parker, the executive director of Project Bread, the state’s leading antihunger organization. “This year, we’re asking everyone to do something to help. Every dollar, every mile, and every volunteer hour counts.”

Grant Supports Food for Frail Homebound Seniors in Boston

The Wal-Mart Foundation recently awarded Project Bread $25,000 to support the Food for Seniors Program. This program supports Project Bread’s mission by providing immediate hunger relief to homebound elders while helping them enroll in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as “food stamps.” Escalating food costs and fixed incomes are causing an increasing number of seniors to seek out food assistance.

Hunger: No one should face it alone

Register for The Walk for Hunger, May 3

The demand for emergency food has never been greater. Pantries and meal programs supported by Project Bread, Massachusetts’ leading antihunger organization, have never been more crucial. And The Walk for Hunger, Project Bread’s annual fundraiser, has never been timelier. On May 3, thousands of people will come to Boston for the 20-mile pledge walk to raise money during the 41st Walk for Hunger. Every dollar, every mile, and every volunteer hour counts for our neighbors in need. Registration is now open to participate.
