The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today a Boston Municipal Court judge erred when he dismissed drug-dealing charges after a prosecutor couldn't say when a backlogged state lab would have results back on the pills allegedly found on her.
The ruling means that Laura Butler will once again have to face charges of dealing prescription drugs in the Haymarket area in 2012.
Around 3:40 p.m. Firefighters quickly doused the fire, in a ground-level closet inside the station, but the T evacuated riders due to the smoke. Trains, however, continued to operate through the station.
What initially seemed like a possible fire on a crossover switch just past North Station around 2:40 p.m. turned out to be smoke from a brake pad on a passing train that got jammed against a wheel, the MBTA says.
The T shut power on the inbound side to let firefighters assess the situation as disabled train was moved to Wellington for repair.
Around 2:40 p.m., both Meredith Sandiford and Anne Hjortshoj reported smoke at Downtown Crossing.

Even as the rain supposedly nears the end of its increasingly annoying reign, the waters just keep piling up. From T stations to Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown and Circuit Drive in Franklin Park, which police shut due to flooding to Roslindale Square, which lost power, Bostonians have had enough, enough to slap anybody who might chirpily say "at least it's not snow!" Yeah, that guy.
In Somerville, one motorist had to be rescued from flood waters in Union Square.

Southbound Red Line service has yet to reach standstill proportions, but that's of little solace to people jammed onto platforms who can't even sardine themselves into trains.

MBTA officials today showed off the first of 60 diesel-hybrid buses that they say will save money on fuel - and give T police real-time surveillance of bus riders.
Around 11:30 a.m., T General Manager Beverly Scott arrived at Haymarket station, where the bus - which still had that new-bus smell - awaited her inspection. She glowingly looked at the new seats - some configured for single riders - declared she loves buses and tried out the driver's seat.

Transit Police report a man pulled out from under a southbound Orange Line train at Haymarket this evening has died.
The man was conscious and talking to firefighters as they extricated him around 6:15 p.m. about 35 minutes after he was hit by the train. The man, white and apparently in his 40s, was rushed to Mass. General, where he died about 8:30 p.m.
Transit Police say foul play is not suspected.

Over the weekend, the RMV shut its Chinatown branch and opened a new one in the building above the Haymarket T stop.
As always, the Roslindale RMV provides ample space for standing outside while you wait for your number to be called inside.
The RMV announced today that its replacement for the Chinatown branch opens Sept. 15 in that parking garage/office building atop the Haymarket T stop that will also house the Boston Public Market.
The RMV will occupy the building's second and third floors. In addition to standard RMV functions, visitors will also get to enjoy a new E-ZPass customer center.
The RMV will open the office on Sept. 10 for a public sneak peak and for this year's auction of low-number license plates - which will include "351" - a number the registry notes is significant in Massachusetts.
A concerned citizen complains a vendor at Haymarket is obnoxious:
There is a vendor here that yells, swears and is rude to customers. He does this all in front of his son and other children/families without provocation. Is there anyway to have him written up or is there an association to call to complain or is Haymarket just unregulated? Thank you.

A mechanical problem on an outbound Orange Line train ended with smoke in the front car and passengers ordered to evacuate at Haymarket shortly before 5:15 p.m. - bringing service towards Oak Grove to a halt and firefighters racing to the station as fast as they could during rush-hour traffic.

Orange line at Haymarket just came to a sudden stop, told to evacuate, smoke coming from first car, people screaming.
BFD found smoke, but no fire.
Transit Police report arresting an Arlington man last night for an incident on an inbound Orange Line train they say started with him hurling insults at two women and escalated to him trying to rob them, spitting at them and waving his fists at them.
Police say a male passenger managed to get ahold of Richard Botelho, 43, and keep him from moving until police could arrive at the Haymarket Orange Line platform around 8:45 p.m.

Boston Police report a man who interceded in another man's attack on a woman near Haymarket around midnight got stabbed but still managed to grapple the attacker to the ground and hold him there until police arrived.
Jim Salini, president of the North End/Waterfront Residents' Association, writes he's tired of stepping over three homeless people who sleep outside Haymarket station and says if they don't vacate the premises and police refuse to do anything, he's going to court and press charges against them somehow.
If I see any individuals lying there or loitering, I will immediately dial 911 and ask police to remove them. I will press charges. I will at the same time call the press.
I know that you cannot force individuals to go to a shelter. But they have no right to trespass on MBTA property, inconveniencing commuters and making our neighborhood and entire city look stupid or worse.
Between Haymarket and Government Center around 10 p.m. The Orange Line is being suggested as an alternative in either direction.
UPDATE, Friday a.m.: Appears to have been fixed.
Transit Police report arresting Raymond Castillo, 34, on charges he's the man seen on video attacking a woman in a passageway at the Haymarket T stop on Jan. 6 - and getting away with all of $2.
Boston Municipal Court Judge Annette Forde imposed $25,000 bail at Castillo's arraignment on charges of armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
