The Friends of the Public Garden board has a simple message for Boston 2024: Get offa their lawns.

The park advocacy group, which also looks after the Common, says it's against Boston 2024's proposals to build a 16,000-seat beach-volleyball stadium on the Common and to use Charles Street and part of the Public Garden for a marathon and bicycle races.

Proposed Olympic beach volleyball stadium on Boston Common.

That's Charles Street on the left. See it larger.

Plans released by Boston 2024 show most of the Common and a significant portion of the Public Garden - including the Make Way for Ducklings statues - off limits to the public during the Olympics. Construction of a 16,000-seat beach-volleyball stadium and related structures, meanwhile, would shut the ball fields and other parts of the Common for months before the games.

A concerned citizen worries:

Usually in the wintertime the parks department lowers the water level so that if anyone falls in the ice during skating in the winter it is less deep. It looks pretty close to full.

Ice? What's that?

Framed landscape in Boston's Public Garden

Today, there was exactly one tree in the Public Garden that had decided enough was enough and it was time to shed its leaves in a blaze of glory.

And that tree just happened to be within the frame that the Friends of the Public Garden has mounted on a pole for the convenience of strollers who want to compose their own landscape or outdoor portrait.

Public Garden Swan Boats at night

JB Parrett spent some time looking at the Swan Boats at night (he reports: "20-second exposure, camera placed on the stones at the pond's edge").

Saying good bye to Robin Williams in the Public Garden

All day, people slowly approached the Public Garden bench made famous in "Good Will Hunting" to remember Robin Williams.

Most quietly stood there, lost in their thoughts.

Good Will Hunting bench in Boston's Public Garden

Robin Williams fans are turning the Public Garden bench where he sat with Matt Damon in "Good Will Hunting" into a memorial.

Hedge photographed the bench around 6 this morning.

Buzzfeed interviews the first person to write something at the bench.

Tons of ducks in Boston's Public Garden

La Bibliotequetress stuck around just long enough to make sure the ducks didn't eat that guy by the bench yesterday.

A huffy citizen complains how messy Boston Common and Public Garden pathways are these days and demands the city assign at least two workers full time to keep it clean, and, hey, maybe buy one of those mini street-sweepers while you're at it. Oh, and make sure the mayor sees this complaint.

Somebody at the Parks Department huffs right back (spelling mistakes fixed):

Around 7 p.m. came word that somebody had squealed to the cops and an officer was duly assigned to determine whether there was a pink pig with black spots roaming the Public Garden.

Mission Hill's Bobby the Pig? After all, he's been known to enjoy snuffling through the Public Garden.

But maybe not. Audrey alerted us to Back Bay's own Frank the Pig (Frank being short for Francis, as in, you know, that English guy), whose owner, Hayley, likes taking him out for constitutionals around the neighborhood

Love lock in the Public Garden

Boston Strolls spotted a love lock permanently affixed to the Public Garden bridge (or at least until somebody from the parks department arrives with a bolt cutter), wonders when this became a thing in the Public Garden. Until now, local love locks had been confined to the bridge over the turnpike at Mass. Ave. and Boylston Street.

Feeding the ducks in the Public Garden

A concerned citizen complains:

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but every evening when I walk through the Public Garden between 5 and 6, I see this gentleman feeding the geese and ducks, in spite of the fact that such feeding is not allowed - I would normally let it go, but he feeds them practically every night, and he feeds them a lot! If this really harms the critters, someone should talk to him - otherwise, they should remove the signs!
