A Forest Hills bridge is a connector, not a barrier, because it keeps 24,000 vehicles per day that are not going to local destinations off local streets. With the bridge, the traffic volumes on New Washington Street are kept relatively low, about one-third of what traffic volumes would be without a bridge.

Two former officials of the union that represents MBTA inspectors were indicted today on charges they sucked more than $300,000 out of union coffers, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Brian Sheehey, secretary-treasurer of Local 600 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union for five years, is charged with embezzling $250,000. John Horan, local president for 10 years, stands accused of taking $78,000.

The DA's office says the skimming was uncovered last year after Sheehey lost an election to succeed the retiring Horan as president and the union's new leaders had the books audited.

An MBTA Transit Police officer assigned to patrol the Lynn parking garage due to multiple break-ins in recent days may have hit the jackpot yesterday morning: A woman he allegedly found attaching a stolen plate to one car, with evidence she had tried to break into several other cars nearby.

Alexis Downez, 32, was charged with five counts of attempted breaking and entering in the daytime, five count of malicious destruction of property, possession of burglarious tools, stealing a license plate and driving after suspension. Take this citizen complaint about leaves partially covering a storm grate in Jamaica Plain. Surely, in the amount of time it took to take a picture and compose a complaint, the alert citizen could have kicked the leaves away.

Walked into South Station around 1 p.m. and it was like walking into a wall of buttered-popcorn smell. Beats the alternative, I guess, but still kind of odd, especially since the station's sponsor this month is some scotch rather than some popcorn brand.
