Open fare gates at a Blue Line stop

Your money's no good on the Blue Line, at least through Aug. 31.

With the Sumner Tunnel now shut for the next two months, the Blue Line is now free, as Donna shows us at Orient Heights. Kind of makes you wonder if freeing the T might be a way for the state to reduce congestion and carbon emissions on Boston-area roads, although that would probably require a fully functional T system.

The bad news is it's flooded, due to water gushing onto the tracks near Haymarket, the MBTA reports, adding riders downtown can, of course, use the Green Line. More distant riders can get on commuter rail at Forest Hills, Ruggles or Malden Center, although the T doesn't say whether you'll have to pay extra.

NBC Boston posts video of "chunks of concrete falling from the ceiling near riders at the Downtown Crossing station on Monday." On a Red Line platform, because that's the line where things fall from above, as opposed to the Orange Line, where things catch on fire.

The MBTA reports residual 10-minute delays on the Red Line after doing something about a train stuck at Porter with a door problem. The T did not say if the train in question was one of the new ones.

Update: Union Square shutdown delayed until at least September.

The MBTA announced today that the Green Line Extension will be shut between Lechmere and Union Square for six weeks starting July 18, not because there's anything wrong with the tracks this time, but so MassDOT can make repairs to the Squires Bridge, over which McGrath Highway crosses the tracks near Union Square. Crush at a Blue Line stop at 5:10 p.m.

Tina StGelais Kelly posted some photos from the scene at the State Street Blue Line stop at 5:10 p.m., which make her doubt the Blue Line can possibly handle any of those motorists the state is urging to take the Blue Line when the Sumner shuts on July 5 for repairs: Read more.

Doors on the new Orange Line trains have proven to be cranky, so it's probably no surprise the problem may be popping up on the new trains on the Red Line, made by the same company with the same basic components. Read more.

The National Transportation Safety Board has concluded that a short circuit on one of the Red Line's older trains led to Robinson Lalin getting stuck in a door as the train pulled out of Broadway station on April 10, 2022, but that other systems that might have prevented his death also failed him - including one that actually worked as it was intended to. The MBTA reports the morning commute included 15-minute delays on the Orange Line when one of those brand, if no longer spanking, new trains suffered another embarrassing "door issue," this time at Green Street.

Honda CRV into the back of an MBTA bus

Transit Police report that at 5:30 this morning, somebody in a Honda SUV drove into the back of an MBTA bus outside Kenmore station. The driver then ran away, police say, adding what was left of his or her SUV was towed away. The bus was driven away.

The MBTA reports 15-minute delays on the D Line due to a trolley that has lost the will to live at Reservoir.

The Dorchester Reporter reports inspections of two staircases Friday led to the T suddenly shutting the Red Line station - but that the T expects repairs to be finished in time to re-open the station on Saturday.

The shutdown comes 20 months after part of a Savin Hill staircase crashed to the ground, narrowly missing a rider.

Transit Police report arresting a man they say was drunk when he drove into the Harvard Square bus tunnel and then crashed his SUV into a pole, around 12:30 this morning. Read more.

The MBTA reports a "power problem" has knocked out the newest part of the Green Line, between Medford/Tufts and Lechmere, and says riders should consider taking the 80 bus instead.

The Dorchester Reporter provides an update on the MBTA's plans to replace the current 1940s trolleys on the Mattapan Line with more recent Green Line trolleys: It could take a decade to get everything ready and would involve the elimination of the current loop track at Ashmont.
