The Metropolitan Area Planning Council says payments on more than $5 billion in debt ensure the T will continue to lurch from one financial crisis to another, hurting riders and the regional economy for years to come, unless the legislature steps in to help do something about that debt.

Don't try riding your bike up the escalator while holding a cup in one hand. SC reports watching in amazement today as a guy rode his bike down the Orange Line platform at Forest Hills, then tried to ride it up the escalator:

He got stuck at the bottom & spilled his coffee everywhere. ... Got one wheel on and lost control while still on the seat.

Wonder if he's the same guy spotted riding his bike down the Orange Line platform at Back Bay last month.

Cut the MBTA Debt NOT MBTA Service

A coalition of riders, community groups and labor organizations have launched a new website -

That explains that debt not transit costs is the problem with funding at the MBTA. Service cuts and fare increases won't solve the problem - not even for a year. It's time the Legislature acted to remove the Big Dig debt from the T.

MBTA investigating possible gay-bashing attack on the Mattapan Line

The Dorchester Reporter reports on an incident Monday night in which a man was assaulted by two men who also yelled "racial and homophobic slurs" at him near the Butler Street stop - and then tried to pull him off the trolley.

Man charged with dickish behavior on a T bus in Dorchester

A Quincy man was arrested at Ashmont station yesterday after a passenger on an arriving 215 bus from Quincy reported he'd been masturbating on the trip.

Michael Wilson, 51, was charged with open and gross behavior, according to MBTA Transit Police. A police report quotes one witness who said she was sitting in the rear of the bus around 11 a.m. when she noticed that Wilson, sitting in the middle of the bus and facing another passenger, unzipped his pants, whipped it out and went to town. The passenger who got a front-row seat fled the bus immediately on its arrival at Ashmont, police said.

According to the report, an officer flagged down by the bus driver and a T inspector found Wilson sitting at the Route 23 berth, his pants unzipped, his belt unbuckled and his hands down his pants.

Person hit, killed by Amtrak train at Ruggles

Update, 7:25 p.m.: One track was cleared and limited train service through Ruggles resumed.

Commuter-rail and Amtrak service through Ruggles is stopped as transit and fire officials investigate a fatal train-vs-person collision on the inbound side this evening. The T is describing it as a "trespasser strike."

Dan Esdale reports his outbound train to Franklin stopped, then headed back to South Station.

In the other direction, Craig Herman reports an Amtrak train is just sitting at Forest Hills.

Menino, conservationists decry combination of fare increases and service cuts

The Globe reports the mayor wants the legislature to raise the gas tax or find some other way to help out the debt-ridden MBTA, rather than letting its riders founder.

The Conservation Law Foundation, meanwhile, is decrying the state's current position that riders can choose steep fare hikes or massive service cuts:

The MBTA has created a false choice between draconian service cuts and drastic fare increases. The reality is it's a lose-lose situation for transit users and Massachusetts. If Secretary Davey is hearing a chorus of 'I would rather pay more but not cut the service,' it wasn't singing at any of the hearings we’ve been attending.”

Crushing or perving? Hot or Not comes to the T

The Metro reports on the imminent arrival of a Web site that will let you take pictures of people on the T, then post them for everybody's ~~amusement~~ sober assessments. The founders of Boston T Crush, based on sites they have up in London and New York, promise it will be "complimentary" rather than "creepy" and say Bostonians are getting a special treat - ours will be the first site to devote space to the ladies.

Motion said the idea came to him and several friends during a night of drinking; and as soon as it launched, it soared.

State considering even higher fares at rush hour to save MBTA services

The Metro reports Transportation Secretary Rich Davey is looking at some new possible options for preserving existing T services, including charging higher fares during rush hour.
