The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that SEPTA, Philadelphia's equivalent of the MBTA, has cancelled a $185-million contract for new commuter-rail cars with the Chinese company building new Orange Line and Red Line trains, after already spending $50 million on the deal and not having actually gotten a single car four years after they were supposed to have started rolling in. Transit Police report on what, so far, is the weirdest MBTA crash of the year:

4/10 12:15AM Fitchburg Line between Cambridge & Belmont unknown person/s left a boat on the right of way. An #MBTA commuter rail train did strike the boat. No injuries were reported & no damage to train. TPD Detectives to follow up.

Select Board Chairman Bernard Greene says the MBTA quickly responded to a town request to erase the "Zionist Pigs" and peace symbol somebody sprayed on at least one signboard at the Longwood Green Line stop yesterday.

The MBTA reports all is now as close to well as it gets on the Blue Line, after a switch problem between Orient Heights and Suffolk Downs that was bad enough to require a little holiday bustititution.

When the T hired CRRC to build hundreds of new cars despite not having any experience with American subways but at a price that was just too good to pass up, the contract contained penalty clauses in case the company was late. CommonWealth Beacon reports the T will be paying CRRC $148 million more - and will waive up to $131 million in penalties if CRRC delivers all the cars by the end of 2027, four years late. Both sides blame the pandemic and restrictions on Chinese companies by the Trump administration.

The MBTA reports a Red Line train derailed at Broadway at the start of service and that it's now running buses between Park Street and points south. The T says no passengers were on the train.

Right in the middle of the evening rush, the Blue Line came to a sudden stop when it developed what the MBTA called a "catenary problem." Bustitution started up between Bowdoin and Suffolk Downs and continued into the night. Multfam Cam reported at 7:28 p.m.: Read more.

The Red Line was all bollixed up this morning due to a train that died at Andrew at the start of the morning commute and then another train that died at Alewife about a half hour later, unless it was the same train that the T somehow revived at Andrew and the train made it to Alewife then died again, the T did not specify.

Wanted for scrawling swastikas at Central Square

Transit Police report they are looking for a guy they say took time out of his no doubt busy day to scrawl swastikas inside the Central Square Red Line station, around 5 a.m. on March 11.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Joshua Wall today sentenced former Transit Police officer Shawn McCarthy to 4 to 6 years in state prison following his conviction last week on charges he concluded a joy ride he gave two women in his cruiser in 2012 by raping them.

Streetsblog Mass gets the scoop that the MBTA and Keolis are going to try to get battery-operated trains running on the Fairmount Line within 3 1/2 years in a pilot aimed at increasing the frequency of trains, shorten trip times and replace some antiquated old diesel-powered trains. Read more.

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted former Transit Police officer Shawn McCarthy for raping two women against and in his cruiser after offering them a joy ride in his cruiser that started near the Aquarium T stop and ended in a vacant lot near the Museum of Science in 2012, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today a man who suffered a traumatic brain injury in an alleged beating by an MBTA bus driver with a history of anger-related issues can proceed with his suit against the MBTA for hiring the guy. Read more.
