Highway tunnel roof collapse - it happened in Fall River, too

This week's Big Dig accident is not the first time the roof of a highway tunnel has collapsed in Massachusetts. The same thing happened in Fall River seven years ago. Read more here:

Lawsuits filed in Fall River tunnel accident

Mr. Cunha said Joao Medeiros was in his car with his wife, Beatrice, and their two children, Sarah and Amanda, when the concrete slabs fell from the roof.

"The two-ton slab fell directly in front of their car and missed it by inches," said Mr. Cunha. "The car catapulted over it, end over end. It went over and landed on the roof, facing the opposite way on Route 195."

With the T now at Orange Alert, Sco says we need to remember all the other vulnerable targets in New England, both present and planned - such as the proposed LNG terminal in Fall River:

... I was driving home through the 93 tunnel sitting in traffic and the thought that came to mind was: This would be an ideal target. There were no police in the tunnel, but one state trooper was parked near the tunnel exit. He fell in behind me and shortly exited at Mass. Ave. In general, I don't believe there is an immediate threat, but I would have liked to have seen more police during a heightened security level. ...

Chris says Boston was relatively calm today despite the sirens that would ring through downtown seemingly every fifteen minutes:

... It's natural that the close ties we have with the UK means that as a whole this event affects us more profoundly than the Madrid bombing did. And it's natural that we'll have to weigh the politics of reponses to terror and the practicalities of keeping secure, though that can wait a little.
