The Boston Conservation Commission this evening is scheduled to review state plans to turn what is now a large grass field and poison-ivy-infested woods along the Neponset near the Shops at Riverwood into a new park with trails, a river observation platform and a performance area. Read more.

Fire in the Blue Hills

Steve H. looked out the window of JetBlue Flight 1222 inbound to Logan from the south shortly before 7 p.m. and spotted what appeared to be "a sizeable brush fire" in the area of the Blue Hills Reservation.

Hunting in the Blue Hills

Yellow areas are where bow-and-arrow hunting will be allowed.

The Friends of the Blue Hills alerts us that DCR will be allowing limited bow-and-arrow hunting in roughly half of the Blue Hills Reservation starting Monday and running through Dec. 2. Read more.

The Canton Fire Department reports a 7-year-old boy from Rockland suffered serious injuries when he fell 35 feet from a ski lift at the Blue Hills Ski Area around 4:20 p.m. Canton paramedics transported the boy to a nearby field at Meditech on Blue Hill River Road, from which a helicopter flew him to Children's Hospital in Boston.

The department says that while serious, the boy's injuries were not considered life threatening.

In the mid-1890s, city officials began looking at connecting the new city-owned Emerald Necklace parks with the giant Blue Hills Reservation the state Metropolitan District Commission was putting together just south of the city and the town of Hyde Park. Read more.

Otter

There was no mistaking this as anything but an otter, because you'd think the Audobon Society folks at the Trailside Museum at the Great Blue Hill would know the difference between an otter and a muskrat, at least based on the sign on the enclosure for the critter.

The original 128

Tim Smith took a walk along the former 128 in the Blue Hills Reservation, left over from the days when 128 was cobbled together out of existing roads, before the current road was built a couple miles further out.

Abandone highway in Fowl Meadow in the Blue Hills Reservation

Tim the roving UHub photographer took a walk this morning on the only part of the Southwest Expressway that actually got built - a short stretch north of that weird, semi-cloverleaf where 95 joins 128 - from which it was supposed to head north through Hyde Park (with an interchange replacing Paul's Bridge), Roslindale, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury before joining with the Inner Belt roughly where the Ruggles T stop is now.

The MSPCA and the Animal Rescue League say they will speak for the deer facing death in the hills south of Boston, at a State House rally that starts at noon on Thursday. Read more.

WBUR reports the state will issue hunting permits for four specific days - on which other visitors will be urged to stay out of the affected parts of the reservation as hunters reduce a deer population the state says is just too large.

The Patriot Ledger and WATD report DCR is looking at letting up to 240 hunters into the 6,000-acre reservation over a four-day period in early December to cull an expanding deer herd that officials say threaten both reservation habitat and public health. Read more.

Milton, Boston and State police continued searching along the Neponset River for Thomas Baker, 62, but began searching the woods of the nearby Blue Hills Reservation as well.
