Robber

Boston Police report two markets about a mile apart on Ashmont Street were held up by two masked men with a gun this week.

Between roughly 7:30 and 8 p.m. a gas station at 1707 Dorchester Ave., near Centre, and a laundromat at 1828 Dorchester Ave., near Edwin, were held up by three guys with the same description: Black male teens in hoodies, armed with guns.

The three returned to the laundromat around 8:45 p.m., after police had left, and held it up again.

UPDATE: Victim identified as Shaquille Browder, 21.

Two people were shot in the parking lot of the Burger King at Columbia Road and Washington Street around 2 p.m., according to Boston EMS Incidents. One later died, Boston Police report.

Both that man and a second, found with non-fatal injuries, were in their early 20s, police say.

The homicide unit was called in due to the severity of at least one victim's injuries. Read more.

Boston Police report an off-duty officer crashed into another car at Columbia Road and Ceylon Street in Dorchester on New Year's Day, sending the two occupants of the other vehicle to the hospital - one with serious injuries. Read more.

Boston firefighters responded to 7 Allston St. in Dorchester at 10:05 p.m. for what turned into a five-alarm fire in a three-family building - in 3-degree temperatures - that also damaged a neighboring building. Read more.

12 Drayton St. fire

A fire at 12 Drayton Ave. that was called in around 3:50 a.m. displaced four residents and sent one firefighter to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, the Boston Fire Department reports. Read more.

Boston Police report arresting Jaquan X. Shepard, 20, of Lynn, on charges he repeatedly shot Phillip Demings, 17, at Bowdoin and Adams streets on Dec. 19.

Shepard was ordered held without bail at his arraignment today, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Wood and ice in the Neponset River

The mouth of the Neponset was pretty icy along the rotting pilings near the Venezia in Port Norfolk today. There was still a fair amount of open water out in the center of the river.

Auld Lang Tide

Whoever's in charge of the electronic signboards on Morrissey Boulevard threw in an extra message in the alerts about possible tidal flooding on the road near UMass over the next few days: "Auld Lang Tide."

Ed. note: Yes, a bad photo, but it's amazing how hard it is to take a good photo when you've had to sort of trot down from the Malibu Beach parking lot and you clearly were not prepared for sub-zero windchills.
