A man was shot in the foot and a car damaged by a bullet when somebody opened fire on a group of men standing on Blue Hill Avenue around 5:25 p.m.

Blue Hill Avenue was shut on either side of Floyd so officers could collect shell casings.

The Supreme Judicial Court today ordered a trial for a man who pleaded guilty to cocaine possession in 2007 after his attorney incorrectly told him it would not subject him to deportation.

The state's highest court agreed with Kempess Sylvain, now being held in an ICE facility in Plymouth, that this "ineffective counsel" was an egregious enough mistake to overturn his plea and let him take his chances before a jury. Read more.

Buried in a Globe story about how the Allied War Veteran's Council is looking to sue the city over the route of the St. Patrick's Day parade in South Boston (something they know quite a bit about) is this statement from the mayor's office:

Boston police are considering changes to the routes for the Dorchester Day Parade and the Bunker Hill Day Parade for public safety reasons as well, the statement said.

WBZ reports Frank Castro and 23 other people were arrested at a Tewksbury home:

The roosters had spurs attached to them, which police say was designed so more damage would be inflected during the fights.

WCVB reports Fernando Owens is back on US soil after being discovered in Santo Domingo, where he was hiding out after allegedly killing and immolating Ashley Bortner near train tracks in Bridgewater in November because he thought she had something to do with the murder of his son Dominic on Shepton Street in Dorchester.

Stanley Staco reports Boston and Quincy firefighters started searching the Neponset River Bridge - and the river under it - shortly after 8 p.m. They are now searching the water past the bridge in Dorchester Bay

Megs was among the drivers who got stuck in the resulting traffic jam at Neponset Circle.

Well, or did until word got out. WBUR takes us inside UP Academy Holland in Dorchester - a tough-love school still owned by the city but no longer controlled by BPS, where wiggling in your seat brings discipline and they even have a room for kiddie solitary confinement for the really tough eggs.

UPDATE: DA's office says the man was 25, from Lawrence, and that his death is not suspicious.

State Police report investigators are trying to determine how a man's body in a car wound up partially submerged in the water off Columbia Point. Read more.

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire in a second-floor apartment at 380 Talbot Ave. early this morning left a woman dead.

The one-alarm fire, reported at 3:50 a.m. in the former Girls Latin School building, was confined to a single apartment, the department reports. Read more.

At 7:21 a.m., Dave Curran reported he got on the train at Wollaston 30 minutes earlier and still hadn't reached JFK/UMass.

Boston firefighters responded around 9 a.m. to 50 Barry St. for what became a two-alarm fire that started in the basement. The fire was declared knocked down about 25 minutes later.

The Boston Fire Department estimates damage at $200,000 and says the cause remains under investigation.

A concerned citizen asks:

Dogs are off-leash in Ronan Park consistently. Most are friendly, but some are not. My dog doesn't get along with other dogs. So, I keep him on-leash at all times, but off-leash dogs (friendly or otherwise) charge him. This provokes fights. Can there be better enforcement of leash laws here?

A state law intended to protect residents from having their free speech squashed through lawsuits by large companies can also protect corporate executives who talk to the media when they're under state scrutiny, the Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled yesterday.

The ruling comes in a defamation lawsuit filed by former nurses at Steward Health Care System's Carney Hospital in Dorchester, who were fired in 2011 after an investigation into alleged sexual abuse of a patient in a hospital ward for teen psychiatric patients. Read more.
