A federal judge today dismissed a lawsuit by a now former radiologist over the state's gun laws, saying the Supreme Court still gives states the rights to regulate guns and besides, he really needs to first finish his appeal in state court on his convictions for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. A South Boston man already charged in two firearm cases was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next week following his arrest on a variety of gun charges at Centre and Redwood streets in Dorchester, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.
A federal judge says the state's ban on certain high-powered assault weapons complies with the Second Amendment and so he's rejected a request for a preliminary injunction that would let one Massachusetts man in particular, but also other gun fans, stock up on semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines while a lawsuit over the issue wends its way through the courts. A fight between two women behind 27 Washington St. in Dorchester ended around 8:50 p.m. when a man shot one of the combatants. Read more.

Boston Police report a man was found shot to death outside 34 High St. in Dorchester at 5:28 a.m.
The man, pronounced dead at the scene, is Boston's first murder victim this year.
Live Boston reports (with photos) a man on the second floor of 50 Fairlawn Ave. shot at firefighters responding to a fire on the first floor around 11:30 a.m.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire, in part by taking care to stay out of view of the second-floor window. After two hours, a BPD SWAT team was able to take the barricaded man into custody.

State Police troopers chased a suspect in a Roxbury shooting last week and a possible South Shore incident tonight up Day Boulevard to Castle Island, then down East 1st Street, where the driver of the SUV he was in rammed a parked Boston Police cruiser in the area of O Street around 10:25 p.m. Read more.
