Will the new sports station hire a woman?

By adamg - 7/15/09 - 11:35 am

Kat says it's past time for women to get a voice on local sports radio:

... In 2009, when one of the most consistent and coveted football analysts/hosts of the past decade is female (Suzy Kolber), and when the Red Sox beat writer for the largest newspaper in Boston is female (the Boston Globe’s Amalie Benjamin), and when our regional sports television network host is female (NESN’s Kathryn Tappen), why are females largely absent from manning the microphones in Boston’s sports radio scene? ...

The News Dissector slices up the death of WBCN

Danny Schechter sums it up: MEDIACIDE: GREAT STATION WRECKED BY AVARICIOUS MANAGEMENT.

Rock of Boston goes off the air

By adamg - 7/14/09 - 10:05 am

Adam Reilly tweets that Mix 98.5 will take over WBCN's 104.1 frequency while 98.5 will become a sports-talk station, since Boston doesn't have enough of those. In August. He has more here.

Charles Laquidara checks in from Hawaii with a short comment about Mel Karmazin, who started 'BCN owner Infinity Broadcasting and then sold it to CBS.

No more Opie and Anthony on WBCN

By adamg - 12/1/08 - 5:24 pm

Jessica Heslam gets the scoop, although station spokesman Cha-Chi Loprete wouldn't say why (and yes, the only reason I'm mentioning his non-statement is because Cha-Chi Loprete is the greatest 'BCN name since Duane Ingalls Glasscock).

Opie & Anthony say goodbye to Boston (again).

By mmurph - 12/1/08 - 4:17 pm

Boston Business Journal reports that Opie and Anthony are off the air (yet again) in Boston. Word is they will be replaced by "Toucher & Rich" starting tomorrow morning with "Hardy" taking over the afternoon drive.

Tom Brady NOT suspended for steroid use

By adamg - 11/7/07 - 12:56 pm

Ah, so this is why my server logs started showing lots of hits yesterday from people searching on variations of "Tom Brady substance abuse."

These are the same people who got fired at WAAF for "reporting" that Tom Menino had died in a car crash. They're now back in Boston, via WBCN, which, of course, broadcasts Patriots games.

Brian: What did we do to deserve these morons?

Adolfo vs Chicken: the game

By whippersnapr - 2/13/07 - 4:22 pm

WBCN has launched the web game Adolfo vs. Chicken, an online game show where Adolfo tries to outsmart a chicken at simple trivia. Change the channel for bonus features!

Adolfo vs. Chicken

By whippersnapr - 1/8/07 - 2:51 pm

If you listen to WBCN, you probably already know Adolfo, aka "Captain Fun." If not, he is quite a funny guy and a real piece of work! He is a regular on the Toucher and Rich show and the star of a new game from Pod Design! The game will launch at the end of this month, but here's a quirky preview to whet your appetite:

On the death of the Cosmic Muffin

Oedipus returns

By adamg - 12/23/05 - 8:54 am

If only for a night. Via Boston Radio Watch comes the news that longtime (and now former) WBCN program director Oedipus will be on the station tomorrow from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. for his annual Christmas eve show.

Too much Ozzie

By adamg - 11/23/05 - 4:47 pm

Borderline doesn't understand why WBCN and WAAF insist on playing so much Ozzy Osbourne - it's not like their 18-34 demographic is going to know him as anything other than that kooky reality-show guy:

... There are not enough 40-year-olds out there who will wax nostalgic while listening to "Crazy Train" in their Altimas as they drive home on the Pike.

And besides, if you're going to play something from 1982 during peoples' commute, wouldn't The Cars be more appropriate?

John Dennis all over again

By adamg - 9/13/05 - 4:29 pm

Bruce does his usual exhaustive job analyzing all angles of the John Dennis / Ryen Russillo voicemail controversy:

... Does Dennis have the "juice" to make a phone call and get Russillo kicked off the WBCN Patriots programming? He denies it to the Inside Track, but c'mon. He does have that juice. He's been jokingly referred to as another one of the Kraft sons, and his relationship with the family goes back to the time when Robert Kraft partially owned Channel 7 when Dennis was the sports anchor/director for the station prior to Kraft buying the Patriots. ...

What ever happened to Nik Carter from WBCN

By kensavage - 7/19/05 - 3:57 am

Where is Nik Carter and what's he up to. Earlier this year I reported about Nik being fired from WBCN but I was wondering where my man has been lately.

Anyone know? Heard? Seen him?
