Jeepers, peepers

It's the first night of the spring peepers in Medfield.

Good news/bad news on Curt Schilling's house

The good news: He's reduced the price of his Medfield estate by 37.5%, so it's priced to moooove. The bad news: That means it's still going to set you back $5 million.

Damn fine cup of coffee

coffee lady

Paul Keleher, who took the above photo, reports that Donut Express on Rte. 109 in Medfield was open today:

... Their coffee is always great but it was particularly good this morning, Christmas Day, and it was great of her to open her shop today. ...

Stealth bombers aren't usually seen in skies above Medfield

Sunday was rather typical in Medfield, which is normally not the scene of major news (scratch that: a crew from "Chronicle" was here on Friday for 4 hrs. of taping at Lords' Department Store, our local institution, which is open 365 days a year: "if Lords doesn't have it, you don't need it". But I digress).

So we were sitting in the car in the Shaw's parking lot while my wife picked up some taco fixings, when one of the kids happened to notice A FREAKIN' STEALTH BOMBER FLYING OVER MEDFIELD. Read more

You've got backhoe

The Herald's Jay Fitzgerald reports that AOL may turn to golddigging to make some money:

America Online is prepared to take a backhoe to a Medfield couple's yard in a search for as much as $500,000 in hidden gold and platinum bars it believes may have been buried there by their neo-Nazi son who made millions off of Internet spam scams.

AOL, the giant Internet provider, said it's only trying to collect ill-gotten assets from Davis Wolfgang Hawke, a former Westwood High School graduate-turned-neo-Nazi cyber con artist. ...

In the 1990s, Hawke headed one of the fastest growing neo-Nazi groups in the country. He lost his Nazi following in 1999 when the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, revealed his real name was Andrew Britt Greenbaum - seems neo-Nazis don't cotton to people with Jewish fathers. He then discovered a lucrative new career pushing penis-enlargement pills.

Salon report on Hawke's spamming days.

Extreme Makeover: Medfield Edition

In case you missed it, last night's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" involved a young Medfield boy with a disease that has left him unable to walk. David, who lives in Medfield, discusses:

... The entire town was involved: our pal David Sharff was the architect, and a gazillion tradespeople donated their time (one of our son's coaches was one of the 23 (!) plumbers, and the coordination was beyond belief: leveling and carting away the old house, digging the new foundation (which I think included removing some ledge), and then building the entire thing in less than a week. We had several chances to watch the process, and I think (I'm not sure, since I was bawling the whole time) it was amazing. ...

He gives a special shout-out to Medfield's own Curt Schilling, who got involved as well.

Whole lotta e-mail

If you'd e-mailed David recently, could you write him again?

Aaagh -- somehow, my entire backlog of 39,000 emails vanished: can't for the life of me figure out what happened, and I haven't backed up that file for a month (your prayers to Norton Volume Recovery would be appreciated).

Forming a complaint

David uses an online FBI anti-terrorism form to complain about how bad online FBI anti-terrorism forms are. Now he's a bit concerned:

... Given what I've said in the past about the FBI, particularly in terms of its record on civil liberties regarding homeland security, I believe this is extremely risky for me, but felt compelled to do it because the stakes are so high. I'm frankly scared about the personal consequences, and could use a little bit of encouragement and hand-holding from you in the blogosphere -- perhaps in the form of supportive comments on this post....
