The mayor's office today announced that Newbury Street will turn pedestrian-only on July 23rd, Aug. 13th, and Sept. 10th.

Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on those days, the street between Arlington Street and Mass. Ave. will be available for pedestrians to stroll down.

Canal Street will have a similar day on July 8.

Credit/Debit Card Only fare machine that doesn't take credit or debit cards

At lunchtime today, I went to purchase my July commuter rail pass. The Charlie sales machine in the State Transportation Buliding accepts only credit or debit cards - which doesn't make sense, given that the machine is in the STB where many tourists congregate and where the T has its administrative offices - and is clearly marked as so (see first photo).

So I tap the "Purchase Charlie Ticket" button, and immediately get a flashing message "Sorry No Credit Or Debit Cards Accepted." (see second photo)

It was odd enough to see a guy in a power boat on the Lagoon. But he was doing donuts - and spraying something out of a hose. Penny Cherubino reports the man and a colleague onshore were there to try to kill the weeds that have been making it hard for the Swan Boats to make their circuit.

Hotel Vendome commemoration

Stevil attended the memorial service on the Commonwealth Mall today, on the 45th anniversary of the death of nine Boston firefighters when the fire-weakened Hotel Vendome at Dartmouth Street collapsed.

Raptor in a Back Bay alley

Bristol Whitcher took a couple photos of this raptor (can anybody tell what kind?) scootching along the railing of a fire escape in an alley between Boylston and Newbury this morning.
