New doors at Downtown Crossing

Mr. Kappus wondered about all the new doors being installed throughout the Downtown Crossing T station. The T replies:

These are fire/smoke partitions that are being installed as part of the DTX elevator project. Upon fire alarm, those doors will close to create a point of safety for people as they egress.

Halloween rider on the MBTA's Orange Line

If this were the Red Line, we'd assume this guy was just wearing a costume, but Orange Line riders are a different breed, as Jed Hresko reminds us.

WGBH reports yesterday's Back Bay smoketastrophe has gotten legislators to thinking about taxes.

WFXT, meanwhile, reports the reason the driver couldn't open the doors all at once was because the train was not fully in the station - and that the T is sending him to reeducation because he should have gotten on the PA and told riders he was going to have to open each door individually.

The T reports "moderate" delays inbound from Forest Hills due to a dead train at Tufts.

Passengers on an outbound Orange Line train busted out windows when the train filled with smoke and the doors wouldn't open shortly before 5 p.m.

WBZ reports three people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The train driver reported a "pop" and some sparks as his train entered the station; possibly due to a motor sparking and setting trash on the tracks on fire. Read more.

The Orange Line is shut due to something smoldering on the tracks between Downtown Crossing and Chinatown. The Chinatown station was evacuated due to the smoke.

By adamg - 10/12/16 - 2:24 pm

The T had to halt Orange Line service in both directions at Back Bay around 2:10 p.m. when a man went for a walk on the tracks towards Tufts. Transit Police officers found the wayward soul and escorted him to a waiting cruiser for a ride down to TPD headquarters for a little booking action.

Service towards Forest Hills is not doing so hot, the T advises.

By adamg - 10/1/16 - 2:20 pm

Some trash burst into flames shortly after 2 p.m. on the inbound tracks just past State Street station sending light smoke towards Downtown Crossing and forcing the shutdown of service not long after.

An MBTA inspector put the fire out with an extinguisher, but Boston firefighters then had to walk down the tracks to figure out what caused the fire. Once they determined it was trash, not a cable, they left the tracks and let the T resume service, around 2:35 p.m.

Dead train at Back Bay on the Orange Line

Sara Brooks was among the people who struggled to get home around 6 p.m. when a train up and died at Back Bay. Mathew Helman was another:

Beyond severe delays. Waiting 25 minutes, 1 jam-packed train.

A train that met the prophet Elijah at Haymarket - and problem switches at Wellington - are causing "moderate" delays, the T says.
