The operators of the Tavern in the Square outpost in South Station want to add a second food and drink outlet: A Mexican restaurant.

The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to let Tavern in the Square's three owners buy the liquor license from the soon to be demolished Brighton Beer Garden so they can open Tavitas inside the station. The new restaurant would have 47 seats inside with another 21 seats in the station concourse.

Dead train at South Station on the Red Line

Molly Lanzarotta was among those crammed into South Station on the Red Line around 8:15 a.m., where a train tried but failed to come to grips with its own mortality.

Firefighters responded to South Station shortly before 9:30 p.m. for a trash fire on the outbound side of the Red Line. The fire was not on the tracks, it was quickly blasted with some water and that was that, except for the smell of smoke and the delays on the Red Line.

Around 5:50 p.m., Ryan McGee reported:

What a difference a day has made: North Station crowds normal at 6 pm for first time in weeks.

Danielle Dulcinos responds:

Pretty similar scene at South Station. Only minor delays it seems and thin crowds. Eerie.

South Staton commuters waiting for trains

And the lucky ones get a ride home! Such as Molly Lanzarotta, who looked back through the station to see who was looking up at the departures board around 5:10 p.m.

A Dorchester teen who allegedly pulled a knife on somebody at the South Station bus terminal last night tried to make like an egg and beat it when the law arrived.

He failed, Transit Police report.

The long arm of the law reached out and grabbed Eddie Divas, 18, cuffed him and charged him with assault by means of a dangerous weapon - a knife - Transit Police say.

Innocent, etc.

Transit Police report arresting a guy from New York at South Station today on charges he was trying to palm off four bogus tickets to this Sunday's game - for $800.

Police credit a Channel 25 tweet about an arrest of alleged fake-ticket sellers in Somerville - and an alert would-be buyer of the doubtful ducats:

WCVB reports a trash fire on the Red Line around 2:30 p.m. was quickly put out by a T employee with a fire extinguisher, but, of course, delays on the Red Line persisted long beyond that, and people on incoming commuter-rail trains also had issues.

At 3:18 p.m., Jenna reported:

MBTA train to Boston from Providence now delayed 25 minutes. Starving passengers searching for the first sacrifice.

WBUR reports on the ceremony yesterday formally renaming South Station as the Governor Michael S. Dukakis Transportation Center at South Station.

In addition to riding the Green Line, Dukakis also served on Amtrak's board. And when the BRA, which owned South Station, was about to have the whole thing torn down after years of neglect, Dukakis, as governor, stepped in and blocked the move. The BRA finally gave up and sold the station to the MBTA, which began the work to revitalize it.

Trish Fontanilla asks:

Great breakfast places 10 mins or less from South Station for 10+ people? Is that possible?

Jeffrey Bliss

Well, what do you know: A man pestering people at South Station for money for an urgent train ride really did have a pressing reason to get back to Framingham. Unfortunately for Jeffrey Bliss, 32, however, that reason was a warrant out of Framingham District Court for shoplifting.

Transit Police report officers watching Bliss figured the elderly couple he'd been trying to wheedle money out of around 4:30 p.m. yesterday by claiming he had to get back to his family had had enough, so they moved in for a little chat of their own.

Guy with shopping cart on the MBTA's Red Line

Why didn't anybody tell us this was Bring Your Big Stuff on the T Week? As if Comfy Chair Guy, Bowl of Pasta with Grated Parmesan Guy and Motor Scooter Guy weren't enough, let us introduce you to Shopping Cart Guys. Paul Nutting spotted this duo on the Red Line earlier this week with a shopping cart full of tools. They got on at Downtown Crossing and off at South Station. He adds:

You should have seen the look an off duty T employees was giving them.

Bomb squad moves in at South Station in Boston

Updated with the outcome.

An unattended bag forced the shutdown of Atlantic Avenue along South Station between roughly 3:40 and 4:10 p.m. - when a bomb technician opened it up and found it filled mostly with papers.

Another view by Mike McD.

Stephanie B captured the moment when the technician opened the bag, determined it was harmless and gave a thumb's up:

Santa mailbox at South Station in Boston on Sept. 10

UPDATE: Seems the box was part of an effort to send letters to the troops.

Conor Yunits was more than nonplussed to see this at South Station yesterday, which, he reminds us, was Sept. 10. Sept. 10, people.
