Chiofaro to Menino: Hey, I shrunk the buildings, now be a leader and let me build

Developer Don Chiofaro says 48 stories is as low as he can go with his proposed $1 billion project in front of the Aquarium and that dramatic changes mean the city should just let him move forward.

"Frankly, I think this is an opportunity for the mayor to step forward as a leader and do something that could be really terrific for the city," he told Emily Rooney on "Greater Boston" tonight (watch).

BRA to developer: Your skyscraper project sucks and your mother dresses you funny

The BRA fires back at Don Chiofaro over his proposal to tear down that garage near the Aquarium (the one with the weird red ribbon thing) and replace it with a skyscraper:

... We are fully supportive of the redevelopment of this site as it is not living up to its full potential. And the guidelines are not anti-development, rather they recommend lower heights along the water's edge with taller heights along the city side of the Greenway. The $16 billion in public investment makes the public a shareholder in the value that we have created for the private landowners along the Greenway - we don't want to devalue our asset by putting another barrier along the waterfront.

Menino to developer: Keep your $50 million

Interesting: Even as the city looks to give one developer a $16-million tax break, it rejects a $50 million offer from another. Of course, one is longtime local stalwart Liberty Mutual, which wants to build its new headquarters in the Back Bay, while the other is Menino foe Don Chiofaro, who wants to put a 59-story tower (and a tinier 40-story one) right on the waterfront. The BRA says it will deign to let him put a 16-story building on what is now the aquarium parking garage.

Group overseeing Greenway accepts free office space from developer who wants to build tower next to Greenway

Matt Conti reports:

The expanding relationship between developer Donald Chiofaro and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy has created the perception of a quid pro quo between the two organizations. ...

Chiofaro wants to tear down that garage near the Aquarium and put up a 700-foot skyscraper, of course.

Sure, let's let Don Chiofaro do whatever he wants

Yvonne Abraham writes today that Tom Menino should let Don Chiofaro replace the Aquarium parking garage with a 1.5-million-square-foot, um, something, and let's be snappy about it, Tom:

Maybe Chiofaro hasn't done himself any favors with his increasingly vocal persistence. But it's easy to understand his impatience, and his desire to start the conversation. And there is no doubting his commitment to contributing something truly spectacular to the city, and in a spot that desperately needs it.

Yes, because Chiofaro has such an outstanding record of contributing something truly spectacular to the city, and in a spot that desperately needs it. If, that is, you're a fan of Palladian windows.
