Food robot in Downtown Crossing

Roving UHub photographer Ted S. spotted one of the meal-making robots outside Spyce, the robo-take-out place on Washington Street in Downtown Crossing, which is undergoing renovations. Tough to tell whether it's coming or going or has gone on strike for more oil or something.

Boston Restaurant Talk alerts us to the opening of Machu Chifa, which specializes in chifa, "Cantonese-Peruvian style fried rice bowls that can be ordered with steak, pork, shrimp, or chicken."

A Suffolk County grand jury yesterday indicted a security guard at the Downtown Crossing Primark store - and the security company he worked for - on charges of assault and battery on a child under 14 and for violating the victim's civil rights for an incident on June 9 in which he allegedly attacked a girl who tried shoplifting. Boston Restaurant Talk reports that Spyce, where robots make the food, is closing for a couple of months of renovations and menu changes. Maybe they could keep the robots working by having them repaint the digits of pi that the MIT graduates who opened the place felt needed to be torn off their Pi Alley wall so they could put in a window (honestly, you'd think MIT grads, of all people, would have some reverence for pi).

Boston Restaurant Talk chews over plans by the local chain to open an outlet, possibly with beer and wine, at 48 Winter St., near Tremont Street, and a short walk from the competing Shake Shack on Washington Street and Burger King on Tremont Street.

Falafel King on Tremont Street downtown will soon be sharing space with Taccos Arabas, which will offer such dishes as shawarma tacos, Boston Restaurant Talk reports.

Working on the Orange Line

The MBTA posted some photos of its work on the Orange Line downtown over the weekend, during the second of six straight weekend shutdowns on that section of the line. Part of the work included replacing track at Downtown Crossing.

Stupid drone

A privacy-deprived citizen files a 311 complaint about the drone hovering outside a residential buildeing at Avery and Washington streets downtown:

A drone with a camera was hovering outside the apartment windows... I took a short video then closed the blinds. When I check a couple minutes later it was gone.

Boston Police report arresting an East Boston man after, they say, officers caught him trying to break into Wild Orchid, 40B Bromfield St. - and then chased him on foot through downtown and along the Common before finally bringing him down on the Common. Read more.

Old Barnes and Noble facade ripped off in Downtown Crossing

Our own Cybah gives us our first look at what has long been hidden by the old Barnes & Noble facade on its long vacant storefront on Washington Street in Downtown Crossing. Workers have been busy transforming the 1881 building into retail and office space since 2018, the year after a developer bought it and decided to renovate the space rather than try to jam another high rise into Downtown Crossing.

At 8:25 a.m. this past Thursday, Kanwar Singh was walking through Downtown Crossing when a woman screamed at him to "Go back to your country!" Singh, who became an American citizen in Faneuil Hall in 2014 and who served in the US military, ponders the racist:

Did she want me to go back to Malden? Because that’s where I live, and that’s my home. ...

The MBTA is reporting 15 minute delays on the Red Line, on top of the delays caused by the ongoing JFK/UMass issues, because of a train that puled up lame at Downtown Crossing.

Boston Police report arresting two men and a woman for a double stabbing on Saturday on Summer Street in front of Macy's that sent two men to local hospitals in critical condition, one with chest wounds. Read more.

UPDATE: Three arrested.

NBC Boston reports two men were stabbed around 2:30 a.m. on Summer Street in front of Macy's. One suffered minor injuries, the other is now in the hospital with critical injuries.
