The Boston Fire Department battled a two-alarm fire that broke out around 1 p.m. at 110 McBride St. Smoke was reported coming from the roof; firefighters found fire in the basement.

Heat rises: Basement contractors set fifth floor on fire at Emmanuel College

The Boston Fire Department reports heat from contractors taking apart old pipes in the basement of the Emmanuel College administration building traveled up five floors and set wooden flooring on fire around 2 p.m. today.

Nobody was injured in the fire in the 400 Fenway building, undergoing renovations, the department says, adding damage was estimated at $50,000.

No injuries in two-alarm fire in Dorchester

Firefighter on way to work discovers fire; woman found unconscious

The Boston Fire Department reports Pat Foley was a block away from the Engine 21 firehouse in Dorchester this morning when he noticed a fire in an apartment building at 40 Sumner St. around 7 a.m. Foley called in the fire, then raced into the building and began knocking on doors to rouse residents and get them out.

Firefighters who responded to the blaze had to use "forceable entry tools" to enter one apartment, where they found an unconscious woman. She was taken to Mass. General in serious condition.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about 20 minutes, the department reports. The department estimates the fire - under investigation by both BFD inspectors and Boston Police - caused roughly $50,000 in damage.

A flaming manhole spread smoke into 61 Brookline Ave. - home of Boston Beer Works - around noon, the Boston Fire Department reports.

The building was evacuated, no major damage done, but one firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation of respiratory issues.

Discarded cigarette makes 13 people homeless in Dorchester

The Boston Fire Department reports a discarded cigarette on a third-floor porch sparked a two-alarm fire in a Dorchester three decker this morning.

Nobody was injured in the fire at 11 Althea St., but seven adults and six children now have to find someplace else to live, BFD reports, adding damage was estimated at $150,000.

The Boston Fire Department reports 14 people were forced out of their homes and one firefighter injured by a two-alarm fire that broke out shortly after 11 p.m. at 55 Msgr. Lydon Way.

The firefighter was hurt when ceiling debris fell on him. Officials say the fire, which started because of a third-floor short circuit, did an estimated $400,000 damage. Officials say 14 residents were forced out of their homes.
