Boston's trash emergency

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports several state reps are shepherding an "emergency" bill that would, immediately on passage, let Boston and other communities ban overnight commercial trash pickups. Legislators consider the ide at a hearing on Oct. 18 at the State House, Room A-1, starting at 10 a.m.

The proposal, backed by, among others, Marty Walz (D-Back Bay) and Aaron Michlewitz, would dovetail with an effort by city councilors Felix Arroyo and Mike Ross to limit commercial pickups because of noise complaints in neighborhoods such as the North End, downtown and the Back Bay. Current state law prohibits such bans.

NorthEndWaterfront.com reports that for the second time, Gov. Patrick has vetoed a bill to override a city public-health ordinance that will force cigar and hookah bars to shut down by 2018.

The proposed law was co-sponsored by state Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, D-North End, whose district includes the Stanza dei Sigari cigar bar on Hanover Street.

Funny but true: Aaron Michlewitz didn't actually get elected state rep from the North End and the South End last month. He only won the Democratic primary, even though the local press seems to think he's already serving, at least based on the amount of coverage they're not giving the race.

The election to determine who actually replaces Sal DiMasi is this Tuesday, when Michlewitz faces independent John Keith and Republican David Trumbull. What are the odds turnout won't even break four figures?

Aaron Michlewitz won the Democratic primary today to replace Sal DiMasi, according to city election results.

Michlewitz got 2,116, compared to 1,945 for Susan Passoni, 103 for Lucy Rivera and 44 for Brian Ross. He will now face Republican David Trumbull and independent John Keith in a special election next month.

Josh Dawson is a member of the Ward 5 Democratic Committee (Back Bay, Beacon Hill and Bay Village). And he's a bit perturbed over the way 3rd Suffolk state-rep hopeful Aaron Michlewitz may have gotten questions from a Ward 5/Ward 4 debate in advance:

... It's disappointing that our Committee's reputation could be tarnished for a short time because of this mess. As a member of the Executive Committee, I will push to have a meeting as soon as possible to discuss this situation and fix any problems with the forum/endorsement process, so we can get back to doing the things that make our Committee great ...

He also says that despite what ward Chairman Rob Whitney seemed to tell the Phoenix, neither he nor at least three other members got the questions in advance.

The South End News reports on some e-mail between state Rep. Marty Walz and 3rd Suffolk candidate Aaron Michlewitz before an April 21 debate. Michlewitz told the paper he wouldn't say whether he received questions in advance but that the real issue is somebody is violating his and Walz's privacy.

Bay Windows reports some 3rd Suffolk gays are crushing on Aaron Michlewitz as he runs to replace his former boss, Sal DiMasi:

Meanwhile, independent 3rd Suffolk candidate John Keith has some fans among the architectural set. This ArchBoston post imagines a Boston under a Mayor John Keith (you listening, Mr. Menino?):

DiMasi aide wants to replace him

Blue Mass. Group runs down prospective candidates for the 3rd Suffolk seat just vacated by Sal DiMasi. So far, the only "official" candidate (new House Speaker Bob DeLeo has yet to set an election date) is Aaron Michlewitz of the North End (Facebook page), DiMasi's constitutent-services director, who filed organization papers with the state on Wednesday and who opened his campaign office today on Endicott Street in the North End.

Other possibilities: Lucy Rivera (former aide to Tom Birmingham and Michael Capuano), Susan Passoni (who ran against Jimmy Kelly for Boston City Council), both of the South End, and Stephen Passacantilli, of the North End, who is currently an aide to City Councilor Sal LaMattina.
