Hardball Times provides an oral history of that famous night when air-traffic controllers from San Diego to Boston cleared a private jet ahead of other planes and then Sox fans on Storrow Drive pulled to the side so a state trooper could get Doug Mirabelli to Fenway in time to catch Tim Wakefield in a game against the Yankees.

Massachusetts State Police (via a statement): We wouldn’t do something like that again, certainly not with lights and siren. As a public safety agency, that was not an appropriate use of our assets.

The City Council yesterday approved an ordinance banning the use of smokeless tobacco at all professional and amateur sports venues in the city. The measure needs the signature of Mayor Walsh, but since he originally proposed it, he'll probably sign it.

At-large City Councilor Michael Flaherty said the measure is a step towards helping young people avoid oral cancer and other problems the stuff can cause.

The Globe's appended this to Dan Shaughnessy's column about Orsillo:

Clarification: Because of a reporting error, an earlier version of this story made reference to signs being confiscated at Fenway Park. The reference has been removed because the Globe could not independently verify that any signs were confiscated at the ballpark. ...

Mayor Walsh today signed an ordinance raising the fines for parking in resident-only spaces around Fenway Park on game days from $40 to $100 - just one day after the City Council approved the idea.

The increased fine will remain in place through the end of the year - after which city officials will evaluate them to see if it worked to free up spaces for Fenway residents. The $100 tickets will be doled out to cars without resident stickers starting two hours before a game and ending two hours after.

With parking-lot fees around Fenway Park continuing to rise, out-of-towners increasingly see a $40 fine for parking in resident-only spots in the Fenway as a bargain.

City Councilor Josh Zakim (Fenway, Mission Hill, Back Bay, Beacon Hill) wants to put a stop to that - by increasing the fine for parking in a resident-only space on the streets around the ballpark to $100.

Zakim said it's unfair that Fenway residents with parking permits have to compete for spaces with out of towners in for a game.

The council agreed today to send Zakim's idea to a committee for a hearing.
