Warren Avenue streetlight is too high

An annoyed citizen complains about one of the streetlights along Warren Avenue between Clarendon and Dartmouth in the South End:

Third light pole from the right was replaced with a pole that is 1-2 ft taller than the others. It looks ridiculous. Please replace it with the correct size. I know it sounds petty, but this shouldn't have happened. Whoever installed it clearly wasn't paying attention.

The Boston Licensing Board last week granted Seven Star Street Bistro on Belgrade Avenue permission to buy the beer, wine and liqueurs license from Estragon on Harrison Avenue in the South End.

At the same time, the board awarded Estragon a full-alcohol license under a state law granting Boston extra licenses for certain traditionally under-licensed neighborhoods and city "Main Street" business districts.

Car in South End community garden

Jeremy Alistair Dick happened upon a car crashed into the Berkeley Community Garden in the South End tonight. He reports:

Major damage to fence and water service.

Seven Star Street Bistro on Belgrade Avenue leans tomorrow whether it can buy a beer-and-wine license from Estragon on Harrison Avenue.

The deal is contingent on Estragon replacing the license with one of the new all-alcohol licenses approved by the state legislature to spur restaurant development in neighborhoods that have been losing liquor licenses to downtown and the waterfront.

The Boston Licensing Board votes on the dual license applications tomorrow morning.

Proposal for 80 Shawmut Ave. in Boston

No cracks about Borg cubes landing on churches, please.

Developers this month submitted plans to the BRA to turn the old Holy Trinity German Catholic church and rectory on Shawmut Avenue in the South End into 33 residential units, by completely removing the interior and replacing it with an eight-story steel structure.

The proposal by developers Dennis Kanin and David Goldman for 136 Shawmut Ave. also calls for a 24-space garage in the new building's basement.

West Rutland Square in the South End

West Rutland Square

A South End resident who came out to find his car on West Rutland Square with a ticket on it yesterday for parking more than a foot from the curb wonders if this is a new way for the city to make money: Create a problem, then dun residents for it.

There is no way to park properly with the snowbanks in the middle of the road.

This is a 2 way street, but the city only plowed out one lane and has left it this way. It is the city's fault that the street is blocked, and now they are trying to profit from it.

CuppaCoffee, which serves coffee and Australian meat pies on Merrimac Street, is planning a second location in the 275 Albany St. residential development.

Although the location would double the number of Australian-owned coffee shops in Boston, it would only represent a 33% increase in the number of Australian meat-pie places - in addition to CuppaCoffee, KO Pies sells the meat pies at locations in East Boston and South Boston.

When finished, 275 Albany will house 400 apartments in two buildings, across the street from the Ink Block project.

The folks at K9 Strolls on Pembroke Street spent part of today roaming the neighborhood looking for dog crap and other stuff that's emerging as our glaciers slowly recede. They report they collected five large bags of the stuff - and reported a number of overflowing trash cans to the city.

Shoveling out a frozen car in the South End

A roving UHub photographer came across a scientist unearthing dramatic evidence today that cars once roamed across what is now Yarmouth Street in the South End.

Scientists next plan to carefully study the meaning of strange protuberances found poking through the ice further down Yarmouth Street:

Boston's DPW announced today it's holding off on the annual re-start of street sweeping until after "streets are cleared to the curb and gutters are free of ice and snow."

Fans of cleaner streets in the North End, the South End and Beacon Hill, where street sweeping normally starts in March, will have to wait for "a thaw and large scale melting," the department said, adding that also means daytime parking restrictions will not apply there, either. The DPW says it will send out notices when the streets are fit to sweep

Smoking Green Line trolley at Brookline Village

It's not usually a good sign when smoke starts pouring out of a trolley, as Emily shows us around 4:40 p.m.

She reports the train was evacuated. Brookline FD showed up and took care of whatever was causing the smoke and the T made preparations to have the train towed away (and shot?) so that service could resume.

Not long after, passengers had to get off an inbound Orange Line train at Mass. Ave. due to brake issues.
