73 Rutland St. in the South End

The Boston Fire Department responded around 3:30 p.m. to 73 Rutland St. for a roof fire that quickly went to two alarms.

The bulk of the fire was knocked down around 4:05 p.m., but not before damaging two neighboring buildings. BFD estimates damage at $300,000 for 73 Rutland and $100,000 each for 71 and 75 Rutland. Read more.

Around 10:15 a.m., a large chunk of tree plunged to the ground on East Brookline Street, near Harrison, crushing two cars.

The past few weeks have not been kind to cars parked under trees in the South End. Dan Riviello, who lives on East Brookline, can only exclaim: "Again!?"

Boston Police are investigating a crash at 85 E. Newton St., just past Albany Street around 5:15 a.m. that sent a pedestrian to the hospital with serious injuries.

Yes, there are military-type helicopters flitting all over downtown, the South End and the harbor tonight. Boston Police acknowledge they're part of some training exercise involving the Defense Department and local police that BPD was really hoping nobody would notice, except it's hard to keep the local twitterati quiet when helicopters are afoot: Read more:

Downed tree in the South End

Neal Gaffey shows us the remains of a Bradford pear tree in the South End this morning, adds:

As pretty as they are in the spring, they are inappropriate as urban trees because they weaken over time and lose limbs regularly. The City is slowly replacing them with American elm, maple, pin oak, and ginkgo as they age out.

A squicked out citizen files a complaint about the "serious cockroach problem" on the Harrison Avenue block just south of East Berkeley:

Every night I walk home from parking my car I have never seen so many on the sidewalks and street. And it only seems to be that one block.

Well, at least they're not flying.
