Deer becomes roadkill in West Roxbury

Boston Police report a deer jumped in front of a startled motorist around 8:30 p.m. yesterday, causing a two-car crash - and its own demise - on Baker Street near the cemeteries.

On arrival, officers observed two cars, one that appeared to have rear-ended the other, and a deceased deer in the roadway. Officers spoke to the operator of the first car who stated that she was driving along Baker Street when the deer came out of nowhere and jumped in front of her motor vehicle. According to the operator, she was unable to avoid the animal.

Police say a driver behind the first car was unable to stop in time and hit the back of the first car. Both cars, however, were able to leave the scene under their own power, unlike the deer.

In December, another deer met its demise in front of Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, when it collided with a Boston Police cruiser.

Will Roseliep reports spotting two coyotes at Walter and Bussey streets by the Arboretum Friday night.

They were most definitely snacking on something - maybe a housepet, maybe some Slim Jims from a nearby c-store.

The Globe's resident crank would rather just kill them, no doubt with his bare hands (no, actually, he wants to blast them with a shotgun), which mystified Roseliep:

These guys looked so chilled, and weren't disturbed by my high beams ...why kill shoot them all when they obviously just want to live a quiet life amongst Roslindale/Newton/W. Roxbury residents?

Some North Brookline residents howling mad about coyotes

Brookline selectmen tomorrow hear a request by residents of Corey Hill to let them do something to get rid of the coyotes they say have invaded their hillside, which crests along Summit Avenue.

The coyote presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

All those winter moths you see flying around are males. The females have only stubby little vestigial wings and patiently wait in trees for their suitors to come calling. One, however, jumped on Jef Taylor, and he provides the photographic proof.

A deer ran into a Boston Police cruiser around 9:50 p.m. in front of Faulkner Hospital. Cop is fine, cruiser is damaged enough to need a tow, no immediate word on the condition of the deer or how much doe it'll cost for repairs.

And the next thing they'll tell us is they've found a moose on Western Avenue

The Animal Rescue League reports it responded to a call for a squirrel stuck in a tree on Lincoln Street in Allston today, only to find:

The squirrel stuck in a tree was not stuck. It was also, much to our surprise, a flying squirrel.

However, based on the photo, it does appear to have lost its aviator's cap and googles.

Court: You can't just run over a mother duck and get away with it

The Massachusetts Appeals Court today reinstated a man's conviction of cruelty to animals for squashing a mother duck leading her ducklings across a mall parking lot in Dartmouth in June, 2009.

Sad end for West Roxbury's daytime coyote

Billings reports it was hit by a car around noon on Mt. Vernon Street, and that for awhile, it was just lying on somebody's lawn with its leg up, because police who responded said there was nothing they could do. It didn't appear to be there this evening, so with any luck it was either put out of its misery or taken somewhere for care.

Residents had been pleading with the city for more than a week to do something about the animal, which seemed completely at ease around homes during the day, but city officials said all they could do was notify state environmental officials.
