Owl in the O'Neill Tunnel

Updated.

A snowy owl that somehow got into the O'Neill Tunnel fared little better than Larry the Turkey: Mass. Environmental Police report the bird was scooped up near the Government Center exit yesterday and rushed to the Tufts wildlife clinic in Grafton for treatment. The Globe reports the bird died.

Larry the Turkey

"OK, who's next?!?" Larry gobbled angrily at Maribeth Scott this afternoon.

Two DCR employees with nets learned not to tangle with Larry the Turkey today - he beaked off their attempts to capture him and get him away from his haunts in the middle of the intersection of Baker Street and VFW Parkway this afternoon, according to a discussion on the Chronicles of West Roxbury II Facebook group. Hood Will Hunting reports:

This morning I watched four Seagulls get into a knife fight on Causeway Street over sidewalk leftovers from Halftime Pizza. Yes it's that good.

Alderfish reports that Larry the Baker Street turkey, who has spent the past couple of months dodging cars on VFW Parkway at Baker Street, has turned angry and is now attacking cars, which is probably not good for his long-term health:

After becoming offended last night by a well meaning driver shooing him out of the way, Larry has decided to regain his dominance by fighting off advancing cars.

Coot and feet

Coots are interesting birds. While they're in the water, they look like small ducks. Then they stand on a rock and they look sort of like chickens. And then, if they come fully out of the water and start walking around, well, you can't help but notice their feet, as Enoch Pratt did today down at Leverett Pond in the Emerald Necklace.

Snowy owl in Somerville

Meaghan Sinclair spotted this snowy owl in her Somerville neighborhood today.

This has proven to be an "irruption" season for the owls - in which the population of lemmings on which they normally feed exploded, leading to more owl hatchlings - and lots of owls flying south in search of food. Good Morning Gloucester has been following the exploits of a pair of snowy owls there.

The Revere Journal reports Jake the Turkey, who'd increasingly proven to be a menace to both traffic and himself, has been relocated to woodsier surroundings in cranberry country.

For months, Jake has been in Ward 4 and surrounds. Just about everyday he strutted down Broadway, stopping traffic, posing for cell phone photographs, pecking at car tires and anything he found interesting on the sidewalk.

Ducks, geese and coots in water at otherwise frozen Jamaica Pond

Geese, ducks and coots congregated in what appeared to be the last remaining bit of open water on Jamaica Pond, at the north end, this morning. Some birds remained aloof: Two swans seemed to prefer their space out on the ice rather than sharing it with their cousins, as did a flock of seagulls. Read more.
