Island in the mist in Jamaica Pond

The island at the north end of Jamaica Pond faded in and out of view during the rain late this morning.

Somebody filed a 311 report from West Roxbury this morning:

Deer sighting. A young buck with two or three point antlers cross Washington St. Heading north, and as I drove by saw him standing in the parking lot of G&G Auto Repair. This was about 9:45 am.

Mike Ball reports on an interlude on the cobblestones outside the Quincy Market building today:

Not-at-all-shy hawk went for lunch at Boston's Quincy Market. It started right on the pigeon, thrilling and disgusting the tourists and locals. This young female brought the pigeon down with a thump (apparently dead before hitting the paving stones) and looked at 50 or so of us like, "You'd better not try to take my meal!"

NBC Boston reports a car traveling south on Wellesley Road yesterday afternoon hit a deer - which then bounced across the road and into the windshield of a mini-van heading north, causing fatal injuries to the driver.

Deer in Stony Brook Reservation

Was on the way to Turtle Pond on the main path from the Hyde Park side of Stony Brook Reservation around 2:20 p.m. when I looked down path 206 to see this deer looking at me. We looked at each other for a minute or two and then he (she? I'm a city kid, what do I know?) bounded off into the woods.

Writing in the Irish Times, Frank McNally finds Boston turkeys tough to swallow:

Whatever else they might be, turkeys are not among the more attractive bird species. You’d have to be a mother to love one.

Waltham is alerting residents that two black bears have been spotted on the north side of the city - and that they should note that bears love bird feeders and easily accessible trash bins.
