Menino wins fifth term

Call him Hizzonah again.

Boston today gave Tom Menino a record fifth term today, re-electing him by a 57-43 margin over challenger Michael Flaherty.

"Let's be clear: We haven't made history with this election, but we will in what we create of it," Menino told supporters. History will not record the win until we make "a new Boston Miracle for our kids," he said. "Complacency is the highest hurdle we face. Let's fend off the temptation to rest on past accomplishments."

Menino and Flaherty have at it again in a debate that starts tonight at 7 p.m. on Channel 2, NECN and WBUR.

Over in Brighton, Ciommo and Selvig have at it again in a debate tomorrow in a debate that starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Brighton Elks, 326 Washington St.

At-large council candidate Ayanna Pressley's campaign reports endorsements by City Council President Mike Ross, councilors John Tobin and Charles Yancey, State Senators Steven Tolman and Sonia Chang-Diaz and State Representatives Kevin Honan, Liz Malia and Martin Walsh.

Today's Boston election roundup:

Chris Kulikoski, running against District 1 (North End, East Boston, Charlestown) incumbent Sal LaMattina, says the city needs to find new ways to combat rats. He said "rats as big as cats" scurry around near his Charter Street home after dark and that the city might have to take steps such as banning leaving trash on the street overnight: "Presently, trash sits out all night for next-day collection. Since rats are nocturnal, it only makes sense not to leave trash out overnight for rates to feast on. These are not the feasts the North End should be known for."

Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral today endorsed at-large City Council hopeful Ayanna Pressley:

The perspective she will bring to the Council as a woman of color is tremendously important, and one that the Boston City Council, in its l00 year history, has never had. Ayanna has great political and constituent service experience and knows this landscape well. I especially like that she wants to bring greater accessibility, greater accountability and strong advocacy to the Council. She knows the Council is strongest when it is collaborative and working together to identify and serve the needs of Boston residents. Ayanna is a well-respected, smart, dynamic woman whose contributions as City Councilor will bode well for the future of the City of Boston.

Pressley is one of more than a dozen candidates seeking one of four open at-large seats this fall. A September preliminary will whittle the field down to eight for the November final election.

Breakfast with Ayanna Pressley

Mike Ball and I had breakfast with Pressley this morning in JP (at Doyle's, of course). He does an excellent job summarizing the discussion so go read his account. Basically, Pressley is bright and personable and well versed in the ways of government, which would help tremendously in the consensus building she says are vital to the city, but at some point, she'll need to take some specific stands on issues.
