The City Council today passed an ordinance under which all trucks over 10,000 pounds used by city contractors will have to be equipped with side guards and special mirrors to reduce the odds a bicyclist or pedestrian will be crushed when the truck makes a turn or changes lanes.

The ordinance, which goes into effect in six months, is the first in the nation. The measure, first proposed by at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley, does not apply to emergency vehicles or trucks used for snow plowing.

According to the mayor's office:

An angry Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury) today demanded an in-depth audit of finances at the city's only vocational high school.

BPS "should be absolutely ashamed" that the school has 62 staff vacancies just two weeks before school opens, Jackson said today, calling for a hearing to consider the issue.

Councilor Charles Yancey (Dorchester) agreed. "The situation at Madison is really at a crisis level," he said.

"The school is failing because we have failed these kids," at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley said. "If the school is being set up to fail, the students are being set up to fail. Enough is enough."

City councilors began work today on a zoning change that would allow art galleries to open in areas such as Newbury Street, where, technically, they are currently prohibited.

City Councilor Josh Zakim (Back Bay) said he was amazed to learn recently that ISD rejected a request by Pucker Gallery, 171 Newbury St., to move to 240 Newbury St. because of the prohibition.

MassLive reports on a State House hearing yesterday on City Councilor Ayanna Pressley's proposal to increase the number of liquor licenses in Boston and give the city control over the Boston Licensing Board, now appointed by the governor.

Pressley's proposal is formally a bill by state Rep. Russell Holmes (D-Mattapan).

City Councilors Matt O'Malley (JP, West Roxbury) and Ayanna Pressley (at large) say it's time for the city to look at picking up food scraps from Boston residents, to reduce the city's trash-disposal costs and create new fertilizer for local parks and even farms.

The City Council tomorrow considers their request to start the process rolling.

City Councilor Ayanna Pressley is seeking four years of punishment records from the Boston Licensing Board to see whether minority owners of bars and restaurants receive harsher penalties for infractions than their white counterparts.

At a City Council meeting today, the at-large councilor said she has heard repeatedly from minority holders of liquor licenses that this is what's going on. The answer, she said, will lie in the data.

In addition to information about penalties, Pressley also wants the board to answer these questions:

At-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley today called for a citywide "trauma response" team of behavioral-health experts to work with friends and families of shooting victims to help them and stem the tide of retribution that often leads to still more shootings.

Pressley said the city needs to make "a strategic and formidble investment" quickly.

City Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury) agreed, and said help is needed in schools, such as Madison Park, where one of this year's murder victims was a student. He said that the first 72 hours after a shooting is critical to help people and stem further violence.

MassLive reports at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley has decided she'd like a go at running the City Council and so will make fellow councilors choose between her and District 2 Councilor Bill Linehan.

On the other side of the fifth floor at City Hall, Marty Walsh has selected a former aide to Tom Menino and a current exec at the Huffington Post as his chief of staff, the Dorchester Reporter reports.

The city council today voted 12-1 to ask the legislature to lift the current state cap on liquor licenses in Boston and return control of the Boston Licensing Board to the mayor.

Only Councilor Bill Linehan (South Boston, South End, Chinatown) voted against at-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley's proposal.

Kid dressed as water fountain

At Matt O'Malley's annual Halloween party, one kid came as the tri-level water fountain O'Malley got for Jamaica Pond.

You always know an election's getting nasty when campaign signs start getting torn down.

The final televised debate is tonight, 7-8 p.m.

Final (if still unofficial) city and districtwide results. The city has yet to release ward-by-ward numbers, but NorthEndWaterfront.com tallied them for the North End, Beacon Hill and downtown.

The Globe reports on a forum in Dorchster last night, in which Barros, former head of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative, compared the law-enforcement response to the Amy Lord murder with the response to murders in Roxbury.

Mike Ross is leaving his car in the Boston Globe parking lot this morning so he can spend a couple days getting from one campaign stop to another by the T and his own feet (why the Globe? Why not? Plus, it's sort of near the JFK/UMass T stop, although the Dorchester Reporter lot is a lot closer).

Rob Consalvo says he just wants to "prevent shadowy groups funded by anonymous donors from dominating and meddling in the race" for mayor and today called on his opponents to either reject money from these wraith-like groups or donate half the amount to the One Fund.

"In principle, sounds like a good idea," the Conley campaign tweeted in reply.

Meanwhile, WBUR reports a group called Democrats for Education Reform (also see) is backing John Connolly, who, like them, wants more charter schools (Consalvo is against lifting the ban on charter schools). It's hired several field coordinators and round up 150 volunteers to promote Connolly.

At-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley went on Greater Boston recently to discuss her push for more liquor licenses for Boston:

By adamg - 4/22/13 - 1:22 pm

At-large Councilor Ayanna Pressley made the announcement today:

I've never been more proud to represent and serve this City. The resiliency demonstrated by the people of Boston this past week has only strengthened my resolve in this work. And while it still doesn't feel like the right time for politics, we are approaching a time in the election cycle where my supporters and my good friends already in the race deserve to know my decision.”

By Douglas Bennett - 4/12/13 - 11:12 am

If Ayanna Pressley runs for Mayor as reports are now suggesting that she may, she will undoubtably be the next Mayor.

It's a no brainer. Number one, the race is wide open for a major female candidate to run and win. There are ten men who running. Many people do vote based on gender. For instance, in the race to replace Jack Hart in the State Senate, many pundits believe that some of Nick Collin's votes will be siphered away by fellow Southie native Maureen Dahill which will allow Linda Dorcena Fory to be able to walk into office. However, I believe with two women running against Collins, the only male in the Democratic primary, many women will split their vote, while many men will vote for Collins. I'm not saying it is right, but it is a reality that gender politics is a determining factor for how many people vote in elections.

City Councilor Ayanna Pressley is calling for a hearing on how to stop the exodus of liquor licenses from the city's outer neighborhoods to Boston Proper and the waterfront.

At Wednesday's City Council meeting, Pressley will explain her bid to change the current arbitrary limit set by the state legislature on liquor licenses in Boston, which she calls an outdated relic of "Prohibition frenzy about alcohol and a power struggle between Yankee legislators and Irish-dominated local governments."

By adamg - 7/31/12 - 7:46 pm

At-large Councilors Ayanna Pressley and Felix Arroyo say that rather than just let old payphones collect trash and rust, the city should use them to set up free wireless zones.

The councilors say Boston could use more places where people could get online for free:

There is a digital divide between different demographics and socioeconomic levels and such a program would expand access to the internet for more Boston residents.

The two will ask the full council tomorrow to approve a hearing on whether Boston could follow New York with a pilot of free, anonymous WiFi.
