Seems a Sox/Yankees game originally scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sept. 27 was moved to 8 p.m. so ESPN could show it, but then was moved back to 1 p.m. again because that evening happens to be the start of Yom Kippur. The un-move came after a New York congressman complained to Bud Selig. Bonus: No Joe Morgan. But looks like ESPN will still be broadcasting the game.

Questions about Kennedy and Catholicism

Q. Doesn’t the church prohibit so many speakers at a funeral?

A. Yes. The Archdiocese of Boston guidelines are quite clear, reading, “only one speaker, a member or a friend of the family, may speak for not more than five minutes in remembrance of the deceased.’’ Other speeches are supposed to take place during a wake.

Jim Gatos reports that a broker in another part of the country who found him via his blogging wanted to give him some potential business. But then:

... [H]e asked me a bizarre, really bizarre question. I NEVER imagined THIS question could be construed as a "qualification"...

If this type of question was asked by a potential employer to a job interviewee, I can only imagine the civil right violations and the potential for lawsuits it may have opened up.

"Are you a Christian" real estate agent? Because my friends, they asked me to find them a "Christian" real estate agent." ...

Gatos thought and then answered he didn't feel comfortable answering the question. He didn't get the referral.

Mike Mennonno walked by the revival tent on the Tremont Street side of the Common yesterday morning:

... "Do you know about Jesus Christ?" he called out to me.

"Je-whoosy-whatsy?" I said, not breaking my stride.

"Jesus Christ," he repeated. "Your personal lord and savior?"

"My personal what?" I said, stopping and looking at him screwy. "Did I win an iphone? What is this?" ...

Back in the day, Massachusetts churches were allowed to veto nearby bars. In this video, a BU law professor explains how Grendel's Den challenged the law - and won in a Supreme Court decision. The church was eventually torn down and turned into a Peet's.

Epic saga of how a debate team from a Jewish school in Brookline taught a bunch of Georgia attorneys a thing or two about the law - as told by their lawyer, who cites precedents that go back a bit farther than American common law (note: you'll need to set aside some time to read the whole thing).

My favorite part: When one of the Georgians said they couldn't reschedule a Saturday mock court case for the Jews because that would open the door to Moslems asking for similar treatment for any Friday competitions, and that just wouldn't do.

There was an anti-abortion protest on Harvard Street in Brookline on Monday night with approximately 40 people including one dressed as the grim reaper blocking the sidewalk. Other "highlights" included a large trailer with some pretty graphic images on it. While I absolutely support free speech and the right to assembly, it was a little invasive and disturbing.

Michael Paulson reports that Old South Church is readying its huge organ for a performance on Saturday - its first since December, when the church stopped using it for fears its booming sound could further damage a wall cracked by construction of an elevator shaft at the Copley Square T stop. Paulson's post has some cool video and photos of the organ being tuned.

Cardinal O'Malley makes it perfectly clear on his blog: If Caritas Cristi and a partner do win a contract to become the default provider for the state health system, women will be on their own when it comes to abortions or emergency contraception:

... Caritas Christi will never do anything to promote abortions, to direct any patients to providers of abortion or in any way to participate in actions that are contrary to Catholic moral teaching and anyone who suggests otherwise is doing a great disservice to the Catholic Church. We are committed to the Gospel of Life and no arrangement will be entered into unless it is completely in accord with Church teaching. ...

Still, he adds that he is asking the National Catholic Bioethics Center to review the arrangement.

The Globe reports on a Codman Square meeting among the city's black clergy; they agree that their own rancor detracts from the battle against gang violence.

Michael Paulson points us to O'Malley's statement on the Pope's decision to un-excommunicate four bishops, including one who says the Holocaust never happened and that Israel and the U.S. are to blame for 9/11.

Basically, O'Malley says the Holocaust did happen, we should never let it happen again and the Holocaust denier's statements are "outrageous." But, he adds, the lifting of the ban is a good thing because the Pope is bringing about reconciliation among Catholics and, at the same time, reasserting his control over the traditionalist communities, and so whipping them into shape.

Paulson adds O'Malley appears to be the first U.S. cardinal to speak about the controversy.
