A retired Cambridge cop can continue to drive while awaiting trial on charges he sent a man into the hospital in critical condition yesterday by plowing into him with his car in front of the Massachusetts Avenue T stop.

A Quincy motorist plowed into a pedestrian crossing Massachusetts Avenue in front of the Orange Line station around 6 a.m., then just drove away, police say.

The victims remains in critical condition at a local hospital, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Lawrence Stead, 69, of Quincy, was arrested later in the morning in Quincy, after police traced the license-plate number of the gray, 1999 Mercury Marquis seen leaving the scene to his home.

A crash around 2:15 p.m. between Thatcher Street/Greenwood Avenue and Westminster Street left one car leaking gas onto the road across from a gas station, which led police to shut the road until it could be cleaned up.

Northeast Fire Alert reports a truck and a car collided head on Business Street shortly after 9 a.m. One driver was reported in critical condition. The road remained shut at 10 a.m. as police investigated.

Downed traffic light at Commonwealth Avenue and Chestnut Hill Avenue

Nick Tomkavage reports a driver, who may have been doing 60, slammed into three light posts at Commonwealth and Chestnut Hill avenues around 9 p.m. Traffic became a mess; the B Line had to slow at the impact site.

Boston MA - Four Sent To Hopsitals With Injuries After Two Cars & Two Pedestrians Collide in Roxbury

Happened around 3:45 p.m. at Tremont and Prentiss streets, near Boston Police headquarters in Roxbury. The mother and child were taken away in critical condition.

Truck fire on I-93

Tatyana photographed the truck around 5:20 p.m. on I-93 north in Medford. Ten minutes later, State Police reported only the left lane was open past the truck in Medford.

MassDOT announced today it's increasing the cost of car registration from $50 to $60 and the cost of annual inspections from $29 to $35.

The transportation agency says the money will help it close a gap in the RMV's budget. $1 of the inspection increase will go to the service stations that perform the tests:

MassDOT will host public hearings on the fee increases this spring. The new fees will go into effect July 1, 2014.

The fee increases are expected to bring in $55 million to $60 million a year.

Car on fire on Southeast Expressway

Darryl Houston drove by a car on fire in the northbound HOV lane around 9 a.m.

Nobody was hurt, Houston reports.

The fire backed up traffic for miles, according to Adam Franklin, who photographed the fire from the other side.

Car crashes into building on Arlington Street in Boston

Woof we were just awoken by a car crashing into the front of our building on Arlington St.

Between Isabella and Cortes, involving an Infiniti and a taxi; two people to the hospital to be checked out.

State Police report a two-car crash on I-93 north at Neponset Circle around 11:30 a.m. left both cars on their roofs, four people injured and the road completely shut into town.

State officials say the Callahan Tunnel should open round about 5 a.m. Monday morning, which will begin to restore karma to Boston traffic and eventually end those mysterious clumps of state troopers along Rte. 16.

However, late-night drivers can expect some delays elsewhere along I-93 for the rest of the week as MassDOT gets the mighty highway back into fighting form:

Most notably, the effort requires the closure of Exit 24/Gov’t Center on I-93 Southbound on Sunday night into Monday morning and the complete closure of I-93 Southbound through Boston overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

A Brockton man faces a host of charges today for an incident early this morning that began in front of Under Bar on Tremont Street and ended at a median on Morrissey Boulevard, police report.

Police say an officer working a detail at the 279 Tremont St. bar heard a commotion around closing time at 2 a.m. and rushed to the street:

The Globe reports MassDOT and State Police will be experimenting with lane closures in the Pru tunnel this weekend as they get ready for a series of lane closures later this month and next month so workers can remove the tunnel's ceiling.
