Architect's rendering

A developer has filed plans for a 17-unit apartment building on Washington Street near Grove Street in West Roxbury.

Antonio Ferrara, who lives a half mile from the site, says the four-story building, which would replace the current Lee Myles Transmission shop at 5205 Washington St., would add "energy and vitality" to the intersection, now dominated by small restaurants and stores, hugging one side of the extinct volcano formed 400 million years or so ago, as well as several auto-related businesses. The as yet unnamed bagel place would join Bruegger's Bagels and Bagelville on VFW Parkway. Exodus Bagels is now churning out bagels just off Belgrade Avenue on the Roslindale line, where it plans a full-scale deli, and, of course, the Dunkin' Donuts on Spring Street and VFW Parkway sell bagel-like round breadstuffs.

Residents against the proposed Roxbury Prep school

Residents raise their hands in opposition to the proposed school.

Officials at Roxbury Prep managed to provide a presentation on their proposal for an 800-student high school on Belgrade Avenue at a meeting tonight at which they were accused of getting ready to ruin the neighborhood, by people who said they don't understand why the school can't put its building someplace else, someplace more "central" to students from Dorchester, Roxbury and Hyde Park than the Roslindale/West Roxbury line. Curvey water standpipes on Bellevue Hill in West Roxbury

The top of Bellevue Hill - at 338 feet, the highest natural point in Boston - is home to two water standpipes used to maintain water pressure in West Roxbury, Roslindale and some suburbs to the south. One, built in 1915, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and one is more modern and featureless - you can probably tell which is which.
