Proposed condos on Centre Street in West Roxbury

Architect's revised rendering.

Residents who attended a meeting tonight on a 16-unit condo proposal for the old West Roxbury Motors site generally gave a thumbs up to a proposed design that eliminates an earlier exterior that residents found too modern for the area, too much like something built out of Lego bricks.

But when one resident questioned why the single ground-floor commercial space would be made off limits to a restaurant or coffee shop - in a building that would be across the street from the neighborhood Starbucks - other residents said that wouldn't bother them, because that stretch of Centre Street already has at least ten vacant storefronts. Allandale pond freezing over

Daniel Guzman went for a walk in Allandale Woods this morning. Look for more freezing tonight, what with the NWS predicting a low of 9 in greater Roslindale. Guzman cautions:

Cracks under a dog's paw, so no skating just yet.

Where the large Panera sign used to be.

The Panera on Spring Street shut Monday - right in the middle of the day.

Howard Sorett at West Roxbury Civic and Improvement Association meeting

Howard Sorett makes his case.

A station that would pump high-pressure natural gas into the National Grid network just off Grove and Centre streets would be a "ticking time bomb" that could prove easy pickings for any terrorist who wants to immolate an entire neighborhood, members of the West Roxbury Civic and Improvement Association agreed tonight. The Boston Business Journal reports the Boston Firefighters Credit Union will be moving into the space at Centre and Lagrange vacated by Eastern Bank. Unfortunately, the space is not large enough to let the credit union sublease space to a pizza place or funeral home.

The location is right up the street from the City of Boston Credit Union, which the BBJ notes has become the Boston Firefighters Credit Union's evil arch-nemesis.

An alert UHub reader noticed the guy who said he wanted to build a hotel catering to observant Jews on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury (where the burned-out McDonald's used to be) sold the property yesterday for $1.4 million to the owner of a Brockton gas station and car wash. The BRA's King David Hotel page is now gone, although you can still see the initial filing for the project.
