West Roxbury

By their SUVs you shall know West Roxburyians

Lino takes a trip to Millennium Park in West Roxbury and is amazed by the number of SUVs in the parking lot:

... I counted a total of 66 vehicles. Out of a total of 66 vehicles I saw 2 pickup trucks, 3 minivans, and 33 SUVs making a total of 38 gas guzzling vehicles. I realize that West Roxbury is one of the most affluent parts of the city of Boston but a parking lot where 57% of the vehicles are gas guzzlers, I sort of wonder about the mental stability of some of these people. Don't they realize that bigger is NOT always better. ...

Two things: Not everybody there is from West Roxbury. Millennium Park is sort of the regional soccer center. But then again, this is West Roxbury, where one pizza place (Target Pizza on Washington Street) uses a Hummer H2 to deliver pizzas.

West Roxbury's giant hole in the ground

Jef Taylor didn't fall into the West Roxbury quarry on a walk this weekend and so is able to post photos of the still active crushed-stone facility. He apparently did not yell "Yabba-dabba-DOO!" before he left, either.

West Roxbury, Roslindale car owners need to remember they live in a city

Boston Police report that of 20 car break-ins reported in District E-5 (West Roxbury and Roslindale) since April 24, 18 involved cars that were unlocked. Also: Leaving MP3 players, gym bags, GPS systems and wallets (wallets? sheesh) in plain view in your car is really asking for trouble.

On the plus side, police say they arrested a guy yesterday they think was involved in several of the above incidents.

Masked thugs in West Roxbury; lying teen in Roslindale

The Transcript reports a Domino's delivery guy was held up on April 21 at Washington and LaGrange streets by "a group of masked men," at least four of whom had knives:

... The robbers reportedly stole $200 cash from deliveries, two pizzas, an order of cinnamon sticks, unknown appetizers and soda. ...

Meanwhile, up Washington Street in Roslindale, the Transcript also informs us, a 15-year-old girl from Dedham learned that if you tell police a bunch of guys threatened to tase you if you didn't hand over your cell phone and then ran into the Washington-Beech project, police are going to want to know your parents' phone number and by then it's too late to decide you don't want to talk to police after all, what with your parents having told you to stay out of Roslindale and all.

Brigham's to return to Centre Street in West Roxbury

The West Roxbury Bulletin reports that the new iScream Works (to replace the old Imagine That) will be selling Brigham's ice cream "in quarts, sundaes and cones." Seems one of the new owners is an advertising guy and one of his clients is, ta da, Brigham's. Opening could be by Memorial Day.

Centre Street used to have an actual Brigham's parlor, but it closed years ago, to be replaced by Yoo Hoo's, which itself shut down, to be replaced by Himalayan Bistro.

Woods on fire

Four-alarm brush fire in Stony Brook Reservation (that might explain why it smelled like wood smoke when we drove through the reservation and Dedham Center around 2).

Why it went to four alarms.

And Dedham's worried about us?

Some Dedhamites recently got all flustered by a rumor that alleged criminals from Roslindale's Washington-Beech housing project would be moved to their town (it was a false alarm). Now the Roslindale Transcript reports on a drug bust on Washington Street in West Roxbury: A Dedham man was arrested April 12 when Boston Police allegedly spotted him dealing drugs. They also arrested one of his alleged customers: A guy from Walpole. When are these suburban towns going to stop exporting their criminals to Boston?
